Service Resumption Notice

Hudson Bay Railway crews have successfully addressed recent service disruptions across the rail network, including the high-water event on the Thicket Subdivision outside Thompson. Train operations are now resuming normally.

The freight train is currently travelling between Gillam and Thompson, and VIA Rail has notified passengers for today and tomorrow as service returns to normal.

We would like to thank our customers, passengers, partners, and northern communities for their patience and understanding, as well as our crews for their hard work. Following a winter of significant snowfall and a rapid spring melt, crews will continue to monitor the railway, be proactive, and address changing conditions.

Service Interruption Notice

Hudson Bay Railway crews are currently responding to an active wildfire situation on a section of the railway north of Wanless, Mb. Crews are working closely with emergency responders and government agencies to ensure the safety of passengers and employees. Emergency responders are supporting efforts to move affected passengers by bus around the impacted area. As a result, rail service is disrupted to Pukatawagan.

Separately, on the Thicket Subdivision near Thompson, significant seasonal snowfall and rapidly warming temperatures has caused high water to cross the railway. Crews and equipment have been mobilized, and work is underway to restore operations as quickly as possible.

Service between Churchill, Gillam and The Pas is expected to operate as scheduled. VIA Rail is arranging alternative transportation for affected passengers travelling to Thompson.

Our team is actively evaluating timelines and next steps, with the safe resumption of service our top priority. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

We appreciate the patience and understanding of our customers, passengers, and partners as we work to address these situations.

Hudson Bay Railway Update

Following this year’s heavy snow fall, Hudson Bay Railway crews have been working on and monitoring the railway, focusing on areas where high water is expected to occur. The well-above normal heat forecast in the days ahead is expected to bring much faster melting.

There is no immediate impact on train schedules, and we will continue to monitor and keep the public updated.

Thank you to all crews for your hard work and commitment.

Service Update
Hudson Bay Railway crews have successfully cleared the track in and around the Churchill area, restoring service following significant snow drifting caused by heavy snowfall and high winds.

We are grateful to everyone who worked hard to make this happen. Thanks to their efforts, a southbound way freight train travelled to Thompson today, and we currently expect to operate the northbound way freight service to Churchill tomorrow on schedule. We are working closely with VIA on passenger service and they will provide updates to passengers.

Our top priority remains keeping the line open and ensuring the safe movement of both people and freight. Further significant storm activity is expected in the Churchill area later this week, and preparations are already underway to ensure crews and equipment can respond quickly to additional drifting and changing conditions.

We will continue to provide updates as they are available.

Service Interruption Notice

Due to significant snow drifts South of Churchill, sections of the Hudson Bay Railway have become temporarily impassable.

The resumption of service is the highest priority for the Hudson Bay Railway. Crews are actively working to clear this section of the line, and additional resources have been brought in for support as snow drifts continue to build as soon as they are removed. We will provide further updates tomorrow.

This has been a unique winter, with heavy snowfall continuing to impact the region, and we will continue to put the safety of our customers and crews first. We thank our customers and passengers for their patience and understanding as crews work to restore service.
