Helping people on their worst day is no easy task, but Holly is always ready to step into that role.

Our next feature is Holly, an Advanced Care Paramedic who always knew Medevac was where she belonged, and she has never wavered from that goal.

➡️What inspired you to pursue a career as a Paramedic, and what’s your journey looked like so far?
Paramedicine was a great fit for my adventurous personality. The dynamic nature of emergency medicine is exciting and engaging, every call is different. I enjoy working in an environment where you can’t predict what your day will look like, so it’s never stagnant.

I was lucky to have excellent post-secondary opportunities close to home in Prince Edward Island. I went to Holland College for my Primary Care and Advanced Care Paramedicine, then to the University of Prince Edward Island for my Bachelor of Science in Paramedicine.

I had previously worked as a lifeguard, a Resident Care Worker, and taught self-defense. I feel like those experiences helped shape me into a well-rounded practitioner. Working 12-hour shifts on a ground ambulance was certainly challenging with young children at home, but I was able to navigate it and maintain a good work-life balance.

➡️How did you become interested in working in Medevac?
I was interested in Flight Medicine early in my career, but knew it would require more time away from home and family. Medevac was always the long-term plan. My grandfather was a pilot, and I grew up with a deep fascination and respect for aviation. When my youngest child graduated high-school, I felt I could finally make the leap and pursue my dream. That was almost 5 years ago, and I’ve been part of the Perimeter team ever since.

➡️What's the most fulfilling part of your job?
Being able to help people on one of the worst days of their life. I take this responsibility very seriously. I want my patients to know that I am 100% invested in their care and comfort. I enjoy getting to know them and their families. Being able to lift the burden of another, if only for a short time, brings me great personal satisfaction.

➡️Looking back on your career, which moment stands out as one you are most proud of?
That's a tough question, I have many moments I am very proud of. A career highlight was definitely delivering a baby on a bathroom floor at someone's home! The infant was having some difficulty breathing and was quite cyanotic, but I knew exactly what to do from my training and was able to quickly get the baby breathing normally and into mom's arms. The parents were so grateful and asked my call partner and I back a few weeks later to take some pictures. I will always treasure that memory.

➡️What advice would you offer to Paramedics who are interested in pursuing Medevac work?
My advice to anyone who is interested in Medevac is to reach out to someone who works in the industry and ask a lot of questions. It's a big change from ground ambulance, but the job is extremely satisfying, and it comes with its own challenges. Be open to new experiences, flight is one of the greatest adventures there is.

During , we feel it’s important to highlight some of the incredible paramedics who are part of our Medevac team.

Meet Otto, Perimeter Aviation’s first‑ever Primary Care Paramedic, who’s childhood dreams of being a firefighter led him to a career filled with providing care to those in need all around Manitoba.

➡️What inspired you to pursue a career as a Paramedic, and what’s your journey looked like so far?
Ever since I was a kid, my dream job has been to become a firefighter. I did receive my firefighter certification in 2018, however, there were no openings at that time. To improve my chances, in 2020, I decided to go to school to become a Primary Care Paramedic (P*P). It was this training that inspired me to pursue a career in paramedicine.

My journey began with Patient Transport Services (Stretcher Service of Manitoba) where I worked from 2016 to 2020. In that time, I also went to Vermillion, Alberta for my firefighter training, followed by the Primary Care Paramedic program with Criti Care in Winnipeg.

After successfully completing the national licensing exam, Criti Care employed me and I had the opportunity to work in Northern Manitoba, including places like Churchill and Snow Lake. During this time, I also worked for Rapid Response team and Alternative Isolation Accommodations, both being COVID-19 sites and isolation for patients. Later, I secured a full-time position for Fisher Ambulance Service in Peguis, Manitoba.

After a year and a half working for Fisher Ambulance Services, myself and about 50 other employees were laid off due to budget funding cuts. It was then that I had also received the news that I was unsuccessful in my fourth attempt at joining the city force as a firefighter.

➡️How did you become interested in working in Medevac?
The opportunity arose when Perimeter was hiring a Primary Care Paramedic. Most airlines only hire Advanced Care Paramedics (ACPs) or nurses. So, when a P*P position became available, I took advantage of the opportunity and applied, where I was fortunate to be the one hired.

Looking back, if it wasn’t for being laid off from my other paramedic job or being unsuccessful as a firefighter, I never would have applied and been given this opportunity to work in aviation at Perimeter.

➡️What's the most fulfilling part of your job?
Getting to be a part of a patient’s journey of transporting them to a higher level of care or being able to bring them closer to home.

➡️Looking back on your career, which moment stands out as one you are most proud of?
Being hired at Perimeter Aviation would be one of the proudest moments of my career so far! When I was hired in August 2024, the “Ground Transport Paramedic” position didn’t exist. So, I had to prove that not only was the position worth it, but that I was the right person for it. I was hired as a casual employee at the time, and now I can proudly say I’m full-time permanent, and along with that, the position has grown to two employees now.

➡️What advice would you offer to Paramedics who are interested in pursuing Medevac work?
Be comfortable within your scope of practice and confident working independently. The majority of calls we respond to in Medevac are single-provider responses, so having confidence in your scope of work will give you the confidence you need to be comfortable working alone.

“As nurses, we have the opportunity to heal the heart, mind, soul, and body of our patients, their families, and ourselves. They may not remember our names but they will never forget the way we made them feel.” – Maya Angelou

For we’re sharing the career of one Melanie, a Medevac nurse who was born into the world of nursing and hasn’t looked back since.

➡️What inspired you to pursue a career as a Registered Nurse?
Nursing was something I was surrounded by growing up, so it felt like a natural path. Many of the women in my life - my mom, my aunt, and close family friends - were nurses. Inspired by them, I’m proud to be a second-generation Filipino nurse.

➡️What’s your journey looked like so far? How did you become interested in working in Medevac?
My nursing journey initially started in Victoria, BC, where I was on the waitlist for the diploma nursing program for two years. My boyfriend, at that time, had been accepted into veterinary medicine in Saskatoon, which led me to apply to the University of Saskatchewan. I ended up becoming the university’s first out-of-province student in their Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

After graduation, I returned home to Winnipeg to work at Victoria General Hospital. I started on a medical floor and switched to Labour and Delivery, where I worked for eight years until the hospital decided to close the ward. While looking for a new opportunity, my coworker, who was already flying for Perimeter, told me I should give it a try. That was almost 23 years ago now.

➡️What's the most fulfilling part of your job?
It’s incredibly rewarding when patients express gratitude for the care I provide and thank me for helping them reach their destination, whether it be to HSC for further treatment or back to their community facility to be closer to home and family.

➡️Looking back on your career, which moment stands out as one you are most proud of?
There’s no one moment that stands out above the rest. I have had the opportunity to meet and work with a lot of amazing people, and that’s something I cherish deeply.

➡️What advice would you offer to Registered Nurses who are interested in pursuing Medevac work?
Every day is different. You meet a lot of people, get the opportunity to see different places, and have a wide variety of experiences that you won’t get in a hospital setting.
