Have you ever seen a more unexpected sight than a crab filter feeding?🦀
With their powerful claws, perfectly designed to pick food apart and bring it to their mouths, we typically think of crabs as scavengers. Their handy utensils can make it easy for them to eat anything from fish, worms, shrimp, or even plants.
But when you're small and the water is full of nutrient-rich zooplankton, you don't want to miss out on that tasty snack.
That's why some smaller species, such as porcelain crabs, have developed new tools to filter feed.
If you're lucky and you look closely enough, you might see them waving their tiny feathery appendages through the water, trying to catch their next meal as it floats by in the current.
Next time you dive, slow down and look at the small stuff. You never know what tiny marvel is waiting to surprise you. 🤿
