African Luxury Travel Is Still in Demand, But Winning Bookings Takes More Than a Great Safari

Affluent travellers from the United States are still spending on African holidays, but they are taking longer to book, asking more questions and looking for greater flexibility and reassurance.

At Essence of Africa 2026 in Zanzibar, travel industry specialists highlighted new opportunities and challenges across the US, Brazilian and Mexican markets.

Here are the key takeaways for Africa's tourism industry:

Experience sells: Luxury travellers want more than safari lodges. They are looking for authentic culture, wildlife, cuisine and meaningful experiences.

Speed matters: Responding to enquiries quickly and providing reliable information can make the difference between securing a booking and losing a client.

Trust builds confidence: Transparent pricing, flexible itineraries and honest communication about safety and travel disruptions help travellers feel comfortable committing.

Latin America presents new opportunities: Brazil and Mexico offer potential for African destinations, particularly where travel advisers receive better product knowledge, destination training and sales support.

Explain the value: Helping clients understand conservation fees, transport logistics and the services included in their holiday can make African travel costs easier to appreciate.

Beyond traditional safaris, opportunities are emerging in East Africa, Indian Ocean islands, West African heritage tourism and journeys connecting Latin American travellers with their African ancestry.

The message is clear: Africa's tourism industry must combine outstanding experiences with responsive service, strong trade partnerships and compelling destination storytelling.

At Africa DMC Group, we believe that helping travel professionals sell Africa with confidence is essential to converting global interest into lasting tourism growth.

Africa has the experiences. Let's make them easier to discover, understand and book.

African Tourism Must Put African Travellers First

African tourism has a major opportunity to grow by making African travellers a priority, not an afterthought.

At Essence of Africa 2026 in Zanzibar, tourism industry leaders highlighted the need to rethink how the continent prices, packages and promotes travel for its own people.

From high airfares and visa barriers to limited flight connections and inflexible booking options, several challenges continue to make travelling within Africa unnecessarily difficult.

The message is clear: African tourism must work better for Africans.

To unlock the potential of intra-African travel, the industry needs to focus on:

✅ Fair and accessible pricing for local and regional travellers
✅ Better flight connections and simpler travel requirements
✅ Mobile-friendly booking and flexible payment options
✅ Authentic experiences beyond traditional safaris, including culture, food, wellness, beaches and city breaks
✅ Personalised service that combines technology with genuine hospitality

African travellers are not one single market. Understanding their different needs, budgets and travel preferences is essential to building a stronger tourism industry.

At Africa DMC Group, we believe that promoting Africa to the world must go hand in hand with making it easier for Africans to explore their own continent.

The future of African tourism starts with welcoming Africans to discover Africa.

Congo-Brazzaville Moves Towards Visa-Free Travel for All Africans in 2027!

Exciting news for African travellers! 🇨🇬

Congo-Brazzaville has taken an important step towards removing entry visa requirements for citizens of all African countries, with the proposed policy expected to begin on 1 January 2027.

The country’s Council of Ministers approved a draft bill on 14 October 2026. However, the proposal must still be adopted by Parliament before it becomes law.

Under the plan, African travellers would no longer need an entry visa, although an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) would still be required. Further details on the application process are yet to be announced.

🌍 Why does this matter?

✅ Easier travel between African countries
✅ New opportunities for regional tourism
✅ Stronger business and investment connections
✅ Greater cultural exchange and continental integration

For travel agents, tour operators and destination management companies, this could create exciting opportunities to promote intra African travel and develop new regional travel packages.

At Africa DMC Group, we believe that making Africa more accessible is an important step towards unlocking the continent’s tourism potential.

More accessible borders could mean more opportunities to explore Africa!
