Wan Hai — “WHL HAI A11” Ship-Collision Incident: Follow-up
Monday, 3 November 2025
Latest updates:
1. The bulk carrier that was struck and sank is over 10,000 tons. Most of the cargo on board was steel structures and steel materials. To avoid a secondary accident, the main channel has been closed. Emergency salvage is under way; conservatively it will take 3–4 weeks to clear the sunken vessel and its cargo from the main channel (and it could take longer).
2. The temporary channel now open is much smaller than the main channel and is expected to handle only 50%–60% of the daily vessel volume of the main channel. Efficiency is therefore heavily affected.
3. Because the section with the sunken ship lies on a channel shared with Shekou, sailing schedules at Shekou will also be affected to some extent (there just hasn’t been a special public notice).
4. At Nansha, vessels over 15,000 TEU cannot berth due to the impact. At Nansha Phases 2 and 3, the number of release orders/pick-ups for heavy containers is being limited; the terminal and warehouses are under heavy load.
Congestion is expected in the coming period.
