INNOVATION ALIGNED WITH CORE VALUES

From the very beginning, METRANS has grown by challenging convention and finding new ways to move freight more efficiently.

Expanding into new markets, opening new routes, and operating the first privately run trains required more than technology. It demanded trust, courage, operational discipline, and strong teamwork.

Over time, that mindset helped transform METRANS from a regional operator into a European intermodal network connecting key ports, inland terminals, and customers across an increasingly complex logistics landscape.

What made that progress possible was a strong foundation of shared responsibility, close cooperation, and a determination to find practical solutions, even in uncertain conditions.

At METRANS, innovation creates the greatest value when it stays aligned with the core values that have shaped the company from the start.

Over the past 35 years, logistics has changed more than in the decades before. Digitalization, efficiency pressure and energy dynamics have reshaped the industry.

METRANS has not just kept up. It has moved with it.

From a single terminal in Prague in 1991, it has grown into one of Europe’s leading intermodal networks, with more than 20 terminals, high-frequency rail connections across the continent, direct links to key seaports such as Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Koper and Rijeka, and its own locomotive fleet supported by an extensive wagon pool.

Adaptation was never reactive. It was built into the system.

Digitalization enables real-time flow management and seamless connectivity across terminals. Continuous automation reduces errors and handling times.

Optimization has driven the shift towards high-frequency shuttle trains, in-house rail capacity and smarter route planning, increasing both reliability and operational efficiency.

At the same time, intermodal transport represents a structurally more sustainable alternative to road, supported by ongoing investments in modern technologies, terminal infrastructure and energy management.

What does this mean in practice?

A stable, scalable system. High service frequency. Efficient connectivity from the North Sea to the Adriatic.

The result is not just growth, but infrastructure that keeps pace with Europe.

Because in logistics, scale alone does not win. Systems do.

Is rail freight stuck in the past, or moving towards a breakthrough? 🚆🛤️

In the latest Doprava Dnes podcast, Martin Hořínek (COO, METRANS) shares a direct perspective on the current reality of the rail freight sector.

Key topics discussed:

🔹 The flexibility gap: Why does road transport still dominate? It is not only about price, but also the result of long-term underinvestment in infrastructure. Creating more balanced conditions is essential.

🔹 Beyond sustainability narratives: Real progress depends on guaranteed track capacity and fair energy pricing for operators investing in low-emission transport.

🔹 A long-term outlook: A more coordinated rail system, where freight and passenger transport can operate in a balanced and efficient way.

💬 “The industry cannot function without rail. We need to give the network sufficient capacity throughout the day - not only during off-peak hours.”

35 YEARS IN MOTION. A STORY THAT BEGAN WITH A VISION.

The year 1991 was a time of major change in Europe. Economies were transforming, rules were being rewritten, and new opportunities were emerging. It was in this moment that METRANS was founded, beginning a story that today helps shape intermodal transport across Central Europe.

From the first terminal in Prague-Uhříněves to today’s network of terminals across six countries, METRANS connects inland regions with Europe’s largest seaports, creating stable logistics solutions for thousands of customers.

From the very beginning, there was a clear vision: to develop container and combined transport as an efficient and sustainable solution for the future.

Over time, this strategy evolved into a strong terminal network, a fleet of our own locomotives, thousands of wagons, and one of the most significant intermodal systems in Europe.

Today, METRANS performs more than one million handling operations each year and dispatches hundreds of regular container trains across the continent every week.

The year 2026 marks an important milestone for us.

In the coming months, we will share a series of stories showing how METRANS has evolved from its first steps into today’s modern logistics network.

We are honoured to be recognised as Entrepreneur of the Year in the Podlasie region by the Chamber of Commerce in Biała Podlaska (PL).

This recognition reflects more than a single achievement. It reflects the strength of the network we continue to build across Europe. 🤝

We are especially proud to have CL EUROPORT as part of the METRANS family as one of the most significant dry port operators in the region and to work alongside EUROTRANS and METRANS Rail Polonia – strengthening our presence in this strategically important corridor.

Because growth in intermodal logistics is never about a single terminal, route, or company.

It’s about building connections that work together. 🔗

And we will continue to strengthen what we have built. 🚆

A STRONG COMMON VOICE FOR COMBINED TRANSPORT 🔊

🤝 METRANS Dunajská Streda hosted the Austrian combined transport association COMBINET for its networking meeting on Thursday, 16 April. CEO Peter Kiss welcomed the guests, while COMBINET Chairman Nikolaus Hirnschall thanked METRANS for the invitation and the members for their participation.

👉 Following a presentation of the METRANS Group, the discussion focused on key sector topics, including Military Mobility and Dual Use, the impact of major rail construction works, and the importance of strong industry representation for combined transport, rail, and road at both national and European levels. Speaking with one voice in discussions with national authorities, Brussels, and the European Commission remains essential.

✅ The programme also included a bus tour of the terminal. Dunajská Streda serves as METRANS’ headquarters for Eastern Europe and coordinates train connections to and from Linz and Krems. Train connections to and from Salzburg are organized by METRANS’ head office in Prague.

🚛 Around 500 trucks pick up or deliver containers, swap bodies, and cranable trailers at the terminal every day. Across seven rail tracks for full trains, around 14 trains are handled in continuous 24/7 operation.

WHAT WAS A CONSTRUCTION SITE IS NOW BECOMING A SYSTEM.

👉 At the recent control day in Szeged, it became clear that progress is no longer about plans, but about ex*****on.

Construction is advancing in parallel across multiple areas. The crane runway structure is taking shape, structural layers are being formed, stormwater drainage systems are being installed, and container yard areas are being prepared in line with the project schedule.

With the groundwork for the railway track and related infrastructure now completed, the next phase will focus on bringing rail operations into the terminal.

Key milestones are approaching. The supporting beams of the crane runway will be constructed in the coming period, followed by the arrival and installation of two modern gantry cranes in September 2026.

Behind the visible progress is something equally important: strong coordination among specialised partners continues to provide a stable foundation for each next phase of the project.

The Szeged terminal is moving forward at a steady pace, with further visible progress expected in the coming months. 🚆

FROM TERMINAL OPERATIONS TO DATA FLOW 🚆

At our recent control day with Survey Compass, we aligned on the next phase of a project that goes beyond system integration.

This is about connecting how containers are handled, repaired, and tracked into a single, continuous digital flow.

From repair workflows and technical status updates to SAP data integration and real-time communication with partners - shipping lines and equipment owners, the objective is clear: fewer manual steps, fewer delays, and better coordination across the network.

The timeline is already in motion. Pilot operations begin in May, followed by go-live in June, with further integrations and development continuing through the summer.

Because in today’s intermodal logistics, efficiency is no longer just about moving containers.

It is about moving data with the same level of precision. 🚆

Energy is no longer just a cost variable. It is becoming a structural driver of logistics.

As fuel prices remain volatile and efficiency pressures continue to rise, the role of combined transport is being redefined - not as an alternative, but as an integral part of a resilient system.

Road transport remains essential. But in its current form, it is increasingly exposed to cost volatility, energy intensity, and capacity constraints. These are no longer theoretical challenges. They are operational realities.

Combined transport addresses this at a system level.

Not by replacing road, but by rebalancing it.

Rail carries long-distance flows. Road ensures flexibility at the first and last mile. The result is a more stable, energy-efficient, and scalable model.

Up to 70% lower energy consumption per ton-mile. One train replacing dozens of trucks. A network that already exists and can be further expanded.

This direction is also reflected in European initiatives such as CT4EU, supporting the development of combined transport as a more sustainable and competitive logistics model.

The potential is not theoretical. It is operational.

The real question is how quickly the right conditions can align to unlock it at scale.

Because in today’s logistics environment, efficiency is no longer a differentiator.

It is a requirement to remain part of the system. 🚆
