Vasil Levski Sofia Airport has launched a new baggage handling system at Terminal 2, increasing checked-baggage capacity eightfold from 400 to 3,200 bags per hour. The system includes 52 check-in desks, six baggage carousels, self-service bag drop, and a dedicated oversized-baggage line.

The upgrade also introduces advanced explosive detection and X-ray screening, improving baggage security and operational reliability. The new infrastructure is designed to support Sofia Airport’s future growth and capacity of up to 20 million passengers annually.

📱✈️🇺🇸 United Airlines Adds New Standby Feature to Mobile App

United Airlines has introduced a new standby feature that allows passengers rebooked after a disruption to join the standby list for up to three earlier flights to the same destination. The app will automatically monitor seat availability and send passengers a text notification when a seat becomes available, eliminating the need to repeatedly check for earlier flights.

Passengers can then decide whether to switch to the earlier flight while keeping their existing confirmed reservation until they make a decision. The feature launched ahead of the busy Labor Day travel period, when United expects to carry more than 3.4 million passengers.

✈️🇨🇭 SWISS to Open New Lounges at Zurich Airport in 2027

SWISS will open new Business and Senator Lounges at Zurich Airport in Q1 2027, relocating them from Dock A to a new building beside Dock B. The new lounges will cover around 2,600 m², 20% more space than the current facilities with additional seating, dedicated work and relaxation areas, panoramic views of the runways and Swiss Alps, and around 20 soundproof workstations.

The Senator Lounge will also feature a bar with a wine humidor and a dedicated maturation room for Swiss cheeses and cured meats. Bus gates will be located directly below the lounge, making boarding more convenient for some passengers. SWISS also plans to relocate its First and HON Circle Lounges to Dock B in 2028 as part of Zurich Airport’s wider modernization project.

✈️🇺🇸🇮🇱 United Airlines to Resume San Francisco–Tel Aviv Flights in 2027

United Airlines will resume nonstop flights between San Francisco (SFO) and Tel Aviv (TLV) from March 28, 2027, operating three times per week.

The service will be operated by a Boeing 787-9, featuring 48 United Polaris business-class seats, 21 Premium Plus seats, and 188 Economy seats. United says the route will offer the highest number of business-class seats between San Francisco and Tel Aviv of any airline.

The airline is also planning to resume Newark–Tel Aviv in September 2026 and Chicago–Tel Aviv and Washington Dulles–Tel Aviv in October 2026, subject to operational and security assessments.

✈️🇺🇸🇪🇺 American Airlines Expands Europe Network with Seven New Routes for Summer 2027

American Airlines will launch seven new international routes for summer 2027, including three new European destinations: Porto, Portugal; Reykjavik, Iceland; and Vienna, Austria. Porto and Vienna will operate from Philadelphia (PHL) using the new Airbus A321XLR, while Reykjavik will also launch from Philadelphia using an A321neo. American will be the only U.S. airline serving Vienna nonstop.

The airline will also add new nonstop services from New York JFK to Amsterdam and Nice, Charlotte to Barcelona, and increase New York JFK–London Heathrow to four daily flights. The new routes will strengthen American’s transatlantic network and provide more nonstop options for travelers heading to Europe in summer 2027.
