During the traditional Fire Boat Festival, Boun Lai Heua Fai, the UNESCO-listed town is transformed by thousands of lanterns and candles. Colourful illuminated boats are carried through the streets before being launched onto the Mekong – one of Laos’ most atmospheric cultural celebrations.

For travellers, it is a wonderful time to experience Luang Prabang beyond its famous temples: stroll through the illuminated old town, watch the sunset over the Mekong, browse local handicrafts at the Night Market, discover regional cuisine and gain an insight into traditions such as the morning alms-giving ceremony.

40 years of Lernidee and still right on track! 🛤️

As we are in the middle of our anniversary year, we recently celebrated it in the best way we know: together, and of course on board one of our trains.

For a special anniversary weekend at the end of June, the Lernidee team travelled to Lucerne aboard the Gotthard Nostalgia Express, one of our newest rail experiences. And as befits both an anniversary and a company outing, the programme offered a little bit of everything: fresh mountain air, beautiful Swiss scenery, good company and, naturally, a timetable that left very little room for boredom.

Among the highlights was a boat trip across Lake Lucerne, followed by a ride on the world’s steepest cogwheel railway up to Mount Pilatus. The day ended in fitting fashion at Lucerne’s Swiss Museum of Transport – because after a full day of trains, boats and mountain railways, there was really only one logical place left to go …
