With over 2000 weekly freight train connections, the Port of Hamburg is Europe's largest railway port. With a network consisting of various rail terminal segments with more than 750 points and almost 300 kilometres of track, of which some 160 kilometres are electrified, Hamburg Port Railway ensures that each and every train, railcar and container reaches its destination.

In doing so, Hamburg Port Railway ensures the maintenance but also the expansion of the facilities. For example, the new Kattwyk rail bridge was opened shortly before Christmas. It now crosses the Süderelbe on two tracks and connects the western and eastern parts of the port.

On Hamburg’s initiative, the procedure for levying import turnover tax is being changed. This is an import topic for the whole of Germany’s competitiveness as a foreign trade power. The existing ruling on import turnover tax tied up a great deal of liquidity. The tax may subsequently have been refunded later in most cases, yet by comparison with other European ports, the tax represented a temporary disadvantage on importing goods. On the decision by companies on which regions companies they should in future be investing and how logistic chains are to be financially optimized, Germany has now eliminated a crucial disadvantage. The due date for payment of import turnover tax is now being deferred until the 26th of the month after next. This ruling is valid from 1 December 2020.

The negative repercussions of the Corona pandemic are also affecting the throughput trend in the Port of Hamburg. First-half seaborne cargo was twelve percent lower at 61.2 million tons and the container throughput was 12.4 percent down at 4.1 million TEU.

Yet it is also important that even so, the port continues to provide cargo-handling and logistics services on a 24/7 basis. Despite difficult economic conditions, a dependable flow of products and raw materials for the population and trade/industry continues.

When lobsters travel on water

In 2019 around one million tons of fish and fish products were exported and imported via Hamburg as Germanys largest seaport. Under this heading falls a shellfish frequently regarded as a special delicacy: Lobster. With novel INNOPURE technology, the AQUAVIVA containers developed by French shipping group CMA CGM in cooperation with EMYG Environnement et Aquaculture create the right conditions for safe transport of live lobsters in salt water, promising the consumer increased freshness and quality.
