Down day in Inhassoro = beach day. Just with bin bags instead of beach towels. 🌊

The Ocean Cleanup is a non-profit on a mission to rid the oceans of plastic — intercepting it in rivers before it reaches the sea, and hauling out what's already floating in the garbage patches. We donate to it, and we pitch in wherever the road takes us.

Between Tofo and Vilankulos.
The building material section of roadside market stalls, palm-fenced soccer fields, clusters of straw huts appearing and dissolving into the bush, crossroads villages in full swing, women and children breaking stone into gravel by hand, chapas held together faith, trucks stacked to the sky.
And our first baobabs standing there like they've been waiting.

Diving in Tofo is an adventure, and it begins before you're even in the water — because first you have to get the boat past the breakers!

After that: deep dives. Cold water. Currents and surge. Plankton ruining the visibility. Massive amounts of underwater wildlife. Great landscapes. Humpbacks and dolphins on the way back in. Then twenty minutes (or 2 hours) of trying to get warm again. 😂

Trust me. Great experience. 😜

Two nights in Mlilwane 🇸🇿

We earned this one. After a proper rest day at our lakeside spot just across the border — an intense sports session, a long-overdue cleaning for the Giraffe, and a photo backlog that had gotten out of hand — we pointed the nose south and drove 2.5 hours into Eswatini.

The reason: Mlilwane is one of the rare places you can hike among the wildlife. And the wildlife returns the favour by wandering straight through camp. Morning coffee with a warthog at eye level and washing dishes while chatting with Nyala does something to a person. 🙂

14 km on foot, and for once we looked down instead of out — after weeks of chasing fauna, it was the flora's turn. Trees, grasses, tiny flowers we'd have driven straight past, little purple ones that resemble miniaturetruffula-trees. And so busy we were at admiring flowers, we nearly stepped on a snake! 🐍 Noted: keep looking down, but faster.

Evenings brought Swazi song and dance, and the kind of camp you don't want to leave on schedule.

Adventurous, adaptable, and chill. Still holding. ✌️

Final day in Kruger. Lined up at the camp gate by 5:45.

We thought we'd had our excitement early, when we came across two impala battling it out. Then — a long time of nothing. Dirt roads, washboard track, grass and bush sliding past.

Until… LION!

There she was, standing stock still in the grass, almost blending into it. I could barely get the words out to stop and reverse. We did. And we watched.

The lead lioness came out, checked us over, then checked the road ahead. Lioness number two appeared. Then four young ones, still with spots on their legs. Then two more. Then another lioness.

For about 15 minutes we shared the road — just the pride, the Giraffe and us. We could hear a tenth somewhere back in the bush and, judging by the sounds, he was either eating very well or having a very good time.

Then another vehicle came up behind us and the spell broke. One by one the cats disappeared back into the bush, and we carried on… with magical memories.

Kruger, Day 2 — WOW.

Out the gate at 6am into a proper sunrise, with a zebra to start us off. Then: LIONS. 🦁 Flat in the grass and half-hidden behind a wall of cars, but we got close enough — and the male stood up and strolled a few steps just for us. Giraffe, warthog and buffalo rounded out the morning.

Then the sundown drive turned magic. Baboon families causing full-on traffic jams. A herd of elephants with three little ones. Giraffe glowing in that last golden light. And right before the gate: hyenas — two cubs, and a mom who laughed for us.

Went to bed happy, dusty and completely done in. 🦒

Breaking news: we have booked the ship passage for our Giraffe to South Africa.The vessel is planned to arrive at the beginning of August. We are so excited that our next big trip is eventually coming up. We'll travel from Durban all the way up North to Kenya. To any other overlanders, let us know if you are in the area. We'd love to meet up and we always love to share a glass of wine.
