🚆 Adventures start where the tracks end.

For many passengers, the journey doesn’t end at the last stop.
It begins there. 👣
What is needed to ensure that even the last 500 metres can be covered safely?

The final 500 metres can make the difference between:

🚉 A stop and a destination
🚲 Public transport and seamless mobility
🏙️ A connection and a complete journey

With bike sharing, e-scooters and on-demand mobility, transit companies are extending the journey beyond the tracks—right to the passenger’s doorstep. 🛴🏠
Because the future of public transport is not just about reaching the next stop.
It’s about connecting every last metre. 🌍

Current priorities are:

Development and design of modular mobility hubs with roofing, seating, lighting, passenger information and sensor technology
Use of durable materials, photovoltaics and potential green roofs
Planning of a test hub at the KIT East Campus
Traffic simulations for three different hub types
Analysis of pedestrian flows, waiting and transfer times, accessibility and vehicle capacities
Further development of a virtual 3D vehicle demonstrator for VR/XR applications
The simulation results are intended to optimise the planning and subsequent operation of the mobility hubs.

Whether you’re a commuter, a holidaymaker or a transport company employee, everyone knows the feeling:
🚍️ You miss your connection or are waiting for the bus, and suddenly it disappears from the display.

At that moment, the passenger’s frustration takes over, but what’s really behind it:
An accident?
Faulty signals?
Staff shortages?

What challenges are you currently facing?

At the KAMO: Karlsruhe Mobility High Performance Center Centre of Excellence in Karlsruhe, leading partners from the fields of research, academia and technology transfer are working on sustainable mobility and logistics solutions.

The Country to City Bridge (C2CBridge) project focuses on autonomous, connected and on-demand shuttle buses. These are designed to better connect rural and urban areas and, together with mobility hubs and existing transport services, create a flexible alternative to private cars.

Initial findings from surveys in Marxzell and Waldbronn show that there is potential for on-demand services, particularly for shopping, leisure activities and connections to railway stations. At the same time, important insights are being gained into mobility needs, acceptance and requirements for future mobility hubs.

With the planned mock-up hub at Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT) Campus East, virtual studies on interchange points and the further development of the two test vehicles, C2CBridge is now entering the next phase of the project.
