🏗️ Built— Built in the 2nd century AD during Roman rule, it extends across 3 levels carved into solid rock. Inside, you’ll find a rare blend of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman art — including the striking image of Anubis dressed in Roman armor.

⬇️ Depth— Descends 35 meters (115 ft) underground across 3 levels carved into solid rock

🎨 Unique blend— Fuses Egyptian, Greek & Roman art styles in one place — extremely rare worldwide

🐺 Key feature— The god Anubis appears dressed in Roman soldier armor — a stunning cultural mashup

🔍 Discovery— And its discovery? Completely accidental. In 1900, a donkey fell into a deep shaft, revealing the hidden entrance to what is now considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages.

🏺Name origin— The name “Kom el-Shoqafa” means Mound of Shards, referring to the broken pottery left behind after ancient funeral rituals.
