Ahwa culture is a big part of life in Egypt.

Literally, “ahwa” means coffee, but Egyptians use the word to refer to the local coffee shop.

This tradition goes back centuries. When Napoleon came to Egypt, the scholars who accompanied his expedition even wrote about the country’s coffeehouse culture in “Description de l’Égypte: .

Long before cafés became trendy, the ahwa was where life happened.

Friends gathered after work. Neighbours caught up on local news. Backgammon games stretched for hours. Tea and coffee were shared. Arguments started, ended, and started again. Stories were told. Poetry was recited. Business deals were made.

The Egyptian ahwa has never been just about coffee. It has always been about people.

One of the most fascinating things about Historic Cairo is how much thought, devotion, and craftsmanship went into creating the mihrab.
Mihrabs mark the direction of Mecca, guiding worshippers in prayer. In many monuments, architects had to adjust the building itself, thickening walls or shifting spaces so the mihrab would face the right direction while the monument still sat beautifully within the street.

And in mausoleums, where the space was not mainly created for prayer, the mihrab often became symbolic: a quiet sign pointing toward Mecca.
