🚨 Attention, those shipping goods from China to Middle Eastern markets such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia:

Several major carriers have already introduced new surcharges:

🔹 Maersk:
Additional charges for vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz area, including up to USD 1,000 per container for affected shipments.

🔹 CMA CGM:
Emergency Fuel Surcharge (EFS):
USD 75–165 per TEU

🔹 ONE:
Emergency Fuel Surcharge:
USD 38–100 per TEU
Effective from August 15, 2026

What does this mean for exporters?

❌ Freight quotations can change quickly
❌ CIF orders face more cost pressure
❌ Delivery schedules need more flexibility
❌ Unexpected surcharges can affect your profit margin

Route selection, carrier choice, transit time, and possible surcharges all need to be considered before booking.

ONE Updates Fuel Surcharge From August 15 — What Shippers Need to Know

Ocean Network Express, ONE, has announced a new update to its Emergency Fuel Surcharge, effective from 15 August 2026.

The new rates will apply to global long-haul and short-sea services.

For long-haul head haul shipments:

Dry containers:
75 USD per TEU

Re**er containers:
100 USD per TEU

For back haul and short-sea services:

Dry containers:
38 USD per TEU

Re**er containers:
50 USD per TEU

This is the latest adjustment after ONE introduced higher emergency fuel surcharges earlier this year due to increased operational and fuel cost pressure.

For importers and exporters, the key point is simple:

If your cargo ships after August 15, remember to check whether EFS has been included in your quotation.

Oman imported around USD 44.6 billion worth of goods in 2025 and is investing heavily in manufacturing, logistics, renewable energy and infrastructure.
That means growing demand for products like industrial equipment, construction materials, auto parts and electrical products from overseas suppliers.
Oman is also home to three important ports:
📍 Sohar — industrial manufacturing
📍 Salalah — a major transshipment hub
📍 Duqm — one of the Gulf's fastest-growing industrial ports
For exporters, success isn't only about finding buyers.
It's also about choosing the right shipping route, preparing compliant documents and making sure cargo reaches the right port without unnecessary delays.
A reliable freight forwarder can help reduce transit risks, improve delivery planning and support smoother customs clearance.
If you're exploring the Gulf market, Oman is a country worth paying attention to.

Zero Tariffs + RMB Settlement. Is Africa Becoming China's Fastest-Growing Trade Market?

China has expanded zero-tariff treatment to 53 African partner countries, while a new RMB clearing network now supports direct settlement across 19 African countries.

If you're importing from China, payments may become simpler with fewer currency conversions.

If you're exporting to Africa, easier settlement and lower trade barriers could help improve purchasing activity in some markets.

African exporters may also benefit from broader access to the Chinese market under the updated tariff policy.

The full impact will take time to unfold, but these are two developments worth watching if your business is involved in China–Africa trade.

Here's this week's shipping update:

📈 CMA CGM has announced new FAK rates from Asia to Europe and North Africa, effective July 15, with North Africa reaching USD 10,400 per 40ft.

🚢 The carrier has also introduced new Peak Season Surcharges on several trade lanes, including shipments from China and the Indian Subcontinent.

⚠️ Meanwhile, UKMTO has reported another security incident involving a commercial vessel near Yemen, reminding the industry that operational risks in the Red Sea remain.

In addition, CMA CGM revealed that, due to the severe damage sustained by a container ship that was struck by a missile in May, the company is currently considering scrapping the vessel rather than repairing it.

Freight rates continue to adjust, while regional security remains a key factor shaping carrier operations and shipping costs.

For shippers, July is shaping up to be another month where rates and regional risks need to be monitored side by side.

Here's what's happening in the Middle East shipping market this July:

📍 Hajj-related restrictions are being lifted, and operations at Jeddah Port are expected to gradually improve. Current vessel waiting times remain around 15–20 days.

⚓ Carriers continue to transit the Strait of Hormuz, but most are making voyage-by-voyage decisions based on the latest security situation. War-risk surcharges remain in the USD 300–400 per TEU range.

📦 Capacity remains tight across Middle East trade lanes. Some carriers are applying stricter approval requirements for heavy containers and dangerous goods, while high booking demand continues to limit available space.

If you're planning shipments to the Middle East this month, booking early and staying flexible may help reduce delays.

Stay tuned for next week's shipping update.

Hormuz Just Reopened... Then a Container Ship Was Attacked

Just as traffic through the Strait of Hormuz began to recover, an Evergreen-operated container ship was struck near Oman.

The vessel, Ever Lovely, operates on a service shared by CMA CGM, COSCO, OOCL and CNC. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

Following the attack, the International Maritime Organization temporarily suspended its Gulf evacuation initiative. Before the suspension, 57 vessels and around 1,100 seafarers had already completed the coordinated transit.

Meanwhile, Iran reiterated that commercial vessels should use only its designated shipping routes, while several carriers continue to reassess their transit plans through the Strait.

🚢 Weekly Shipping Signals | Could the unexpected cost of reopening the Strait of Hormuz actually be ship cleaning fees?

In the past 24 hours, 72 vessels carrying around 20 million barrels of crude oil passed through the Strait of Hormuz. Oil prices have already fallen back toward pre-conflict levels.

The International Maritime Organization is also coordinating the movement of more than 11,000 seafarers and hundreds of vessels stranded due to stranded during the recent conflict ; additional capacity and empty containers are expected to return to the market in the coming weeks.

Mine-clearing activities continue, war-risk insurance costs remain high, and congestion is still affecting vessel movements across the region.

Furthermore, as some ships prepare to resume operations after extended delays, cleaning costs have even skyrocketed to tens of thousands of dollars.
