Today marks the 94th birthday of my mother, Joyce Alksne. During her funeral service, my cousin Georgina recited one of her poems, which I had discovered among her papers after her passing. I was profoundly moved by the beauty and simplicity of her poetry, and I found that their lyrical quality lent themselves well to musical interpretation. Consequently, I set her poems to music and titled the album 'Just Ordinary Troubles', inspired by the poem that establishes the tone. I wish my mother a happy birthday, wherever she may be. I am sure she wouldn’t mind that I added a poem (song) of my own to her album.

Sun's Journey
From the eastern horizon emerges the golden sun. Ra ascending in majestic radiance. His eye opens upon where the two lands converge, casting his brilliance across the temple stones and palace walls.
The Pharaoh stands bathed in divine light, a living god reflecting the sun's authority, his golden regalia catching fire as Ra's blessing flows through their mortal forms.
Bequeathed by this sacred radiance, the people tend their fields along the Nile. Barley and wheat drink from the life-sustaining light and the silt-laden waters.
As the day reaches its zenith, dark shadows begin an ancient dance. The serpent Apophis stirs in the darkness, mouth agape, waiting in the western Nile waters.
Ra's barque sails toward the inevitable, and darkness swallows the sun whole. Night claims the kingdom once more. Heat dissipates, coolness prevails, until dawn calls the god to rise and begin again and again.

In February 2025, I attended a conference on Future Opportunities for Seaplanes and Amphibious Aviation in Miami. I gave a presentation on the laws and regulations affecting seaplanes to answer the question: Is a seaplane a boat or a plane? I have now published the speech on my blog.

I first published this article on my blog in March 2020, which is still relevant today. Danielle Smith and Pierre Poilievre are busy playing the victim and blaming the Liberals for all of Alberta's woes, but it is much more complicated than that. Read this post so you can decide for yourself.

I’ve been lucky to discover some incredible street musicians. Bence Boka is one of those gems. I stopped to listen to Bence playing Ancient Hungarian Music on the Lute in an acoustically perfect underpassin Venice. I bought his CD, “Prendo il liuto” or “I Take the Lute,” and have played it repeatedly. Amazingly, 14th-century music can sound so now.

Circa,1989. I remember him as the one-legged Aussie pilot who sailed our hot-air balloon across the Maasai Mara plains on a cool spring morning. "I wonder what he is doing now?"

When you’re traveling through Europe, you’ll notice lions everywhere. They’re on coats of arms, in statues, on building facades—like furry, oversized kittens of the continent. Turns out, lions weren’t just symbols of manliness; these big cats roamed Europe way back in Greek and Roman times, right up to Normandy. Imagine a pride of European lionesses sitting at a sidewalk cafe sipping on espresso and nibbling on baguettes.

During the Children’s Crusades, lions had themselves a heavenly feast. Lions, fattened on the crusading cherubs, showed everyone who the real kings of Jerusalem were. The wings and the book, however, are another story.
