Did you know?

That one of the most remarkable royal coffins of Ancient Egypt was made not from gold, but from silver?

This is the Silver Coffin of King Psusennes I, one of the kings of Egypt’s 21st Dynasty, who ruled Egypt more than 3,000 years ago.

The coffin was discovered in the royal tombs of Tanis, in northern Egypt, and today it is preserved in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

The king is shown in the form of Osiris, with his arms crossed over his chest, holding the royal flail and scepter. A golden royal cobra protects his forehead, while his face is decorated with gold and his eyes are beautifully inlaid.

But here is what makes this discovery even more fascinating…

Silver was rarer than gold in Ancient Egypt.
So creating a royal coffin from silver was a powerful symbol of wealth, status, and royal importance.

Psusennes I was buried inside a series of protective coffins, with the silver coffin placed within a granite coffin and a larger stone sarcophagus.

More than 3,000 years later, his face still looks toward us — a silent reminder that the ancient Egyptians built for eternity. ❤️

Did you know that this massive stone sarcophagus was made for the burial of a sacred Apis Bull in the Serapeum of Saqqara? 🇪🇬

The Apis Bull was one of the most sacred animals in Ancient Egypt and was associated with Ptah, one of the most important gods of Memphis.

🪨 A Sarcophagus Weighing Dozens of Tons
One of these enormous sarcophagi, including its lid, could weigh around 60 tons!

📏 Massive Size
One of the large sarcophagi measures approximately 3.85 meters long, while its width and height exceed 2 meters.

⚱️ Why Was It So Large?
The sarcophagus was designed to hold and protect the mummified body of the sacred bull inside the underground tomb.

🏺 Where Is It?
Inside the Serapeum of Saqqara, a vast underground complex of corridors and chambers built for the burial of the sacred Apis Bulls.

⛏️ And Here Is the Amazing Part…
These enormous stone blocks were quarried, transported, precisely cut, and placed deep underground thousands of years ago.

🤯 Imagine standing in front of a stone weighing dozens of tons and asking yourself:

How did the ancient Egyptians transport such massive stones deep underground and place them with such precision?

This is the painted limestone head of Queen Hatshepsut, one of ancient Egypt’s most powerful female rulers. It once belonged to a colossal Osirian statue at her mortuary temple in Deir el-Bahari.

Look closely at her eyes 👀 — the wide almond-shaped eyes, long cosmetic lines, and traces of original color reveal the incredible detail of ancient Egyptian art.

Although Hatshepsut was a woman, she was often represented with the traditional symbols of a pharaoh, including the ceremonial beard, to emphasize her royal authority.

👨‍🏫 Who Was Metri?

Metri held important titles, including Overseer of the Scribes and Priest of the Goddess Ma’at.

🪵 A Wooden Masterpiece

Unlike many ancient Egyptian statues, Metri’s statue is made of wood with painted decoration.

His reddish-brown body and colorful broad collar still preserve traces of the original colors.

✍️ Why Is He Sitting Like This?

Look closely…

His legs are crossed, with a papyrus scroll on his lap and writing tools in his hands.

This traditional pose identifies him as a scribe.

👁️ Look at His Eyes!

Here is the amazing part…

The whites of his eyes are made with quartz, while the pupils are made from rock crystal.
