Temple of Edfu, Egypt by Christine Bertram

Construction of the temple began in 246–221 BC under Ptolemy III Euergetes I and was completed 180 years later in 80–51 BC under Ptolemy XII Neos Dionysos, father of Cleopatra VII.

The design, scale, and layout of the temple are consistent with ancient Egyptian architectural traditions that were already well established at the time of construction.

For thousands of years, the temple lay buried under the rubble of settlement, preserving its architectural and decorative elements until it was rediscovered in the 1860s by French archaeologist Auguste Mariette, who oversaw the restoration of parts of the temple.

The Temple of Edfu is oriented north–south and appears to have been built over an earlier temple that was oriented east–west.

Abu Simbel Temple
The most notable feature of the Abu Simbel temple are the four colossal statues of Ramses II on the exterior. Another unique feature is that twice a year, currently on February 21 and October 21, the first rays of the sun align with the temple to illuminate the back wall and the statues of the gods.The twin temples were originally carved out of the mountains during the reign of King Ramesses II in the 13th century BC, as a permanent monument to himself and Queen Nefertari, to commemorate his victory at the Battle of Kadesh. However, in 1960 the entire complex was moved to another location, on an artificial hill made of a dome structure, above the reservoir of the Aswan High Dam. The temples had to be moved to avoid being submerged during the construction of Lake Nasser, the huge artificial water reservoir formed after the construction of the Aswan High Dam on the Nile. best;
