Date and Activities: It takes place on the night of the 15th of Sha'ban. The "Mahmal" procession begins after the afternoon prayer from the shrine of Sheikh Abdul Ghaffar and parades through the city streets.

The Mahmal and the Howdahs: A wooden coffin (howdah) covered in colorful satin fabric is placed on the backs of camels, followed by the locals, reenacting the ancient tradition of sending the Kaaba's covering (Kiswah) via the port of Quseir to the Hijaz.

Cultural Heritage: It is a popular festival passed down through generations and is sometimes called "the festival without prayer." Men, women, and children, who are nicknamed "the Mahmal spirits," participate.
