☀️ Travelling to the Canary Islands with a baby or toddler over the next few days? Here's an important update for families...
Many families book their holiday thinking it won't be that hot yet...
However, weather forecasts are now warning that parts of the Canary Islands could experience temperatures approaching 40°C, along with calima (dust in the air) and some strong winds.
If you're travelling with little ones, here are a few simple tips to help keep them cool and comfortable:
💧 Keep them hydrated
Offer water regularly throughout the day. Babies should continue with their usual breastfeeds or formula feeds, and older children should drink plenty of fluids.
👕 Dress for the weather
Choose lightweight, loose-fitting clothing, a wide-brimmed sun hat and plenty of sunscreen suitable for their age.
🌞 Avoid the hottest part of the day
Try to stay in the shade or indoors between 12pm and 5pm, when temperatures are at their highest.
🛏️ Keep bedrooms cool
A cooler room can make a huge difference to your child's comfort and sleep, especially after a long day in the sun.
🚼 Protect babies in prams
Never place blankets over a pushchair to create shade, as this can trap heat. Use a breathable sunshade or parasol instead and ensure good airflow.
❤️ Watch for signs of overheating
If your little one becomes unusually sleepy, irritable, flushed or stops sweating, move them somewhere cool, offer fluids and seek medical advice if you're concerned.
