Stone stacking: the problem with stacking stones in nature

There is no denying the appeal of stacking stones in a beautiful natural setting. A perfectly balanced cairn beside a peaceful lake or with mountains in the background makes for a striking photograph. The process itself can also be relaxing, requiring concentration, patience and slow, deliberate movements often associated with Zen philosophy.

However, behind this seemingly harmless activity lies a lesser-known reality. Stone stacking is regarded by scientists and managers of natural areas as an unsustainable practice, especially when it becomes a widespread trend. Increasingly, local authorities and organisations responsible for protected landscapes are discouraging the practice because of its impact on the environment.

A striking example can be found near Playa de los Ingleses (Cementerio de los Ingleses), on the stage between Arou and Camariñas along the Camiño dos Faros. In recent years, the number of stone stacks has multiplied to such an extent that, in some places, they stretch as far as the eye can see. As the number of cairns continued to grow and alter the landscape, local authorities took action and even introduced fines in an attempt to curb the trend.

Moving stones disrupts small ecosystems. Many insects, spiders, reptiles, mosses and other plants depend on rocks for shelter, moisture and protection from the elements. By moving them, we disturb a natural balance that may have taken years, decades or even centuries to develop.

Stone stacking also goes against one of the key principles of responsible outdoor recreation: Leave No Trace. The best way to respect a landscape is to enjoy it exactly as it is, without altering it.

The next time you come across a stone on the trail, remember: don't move rocks, plants or any other natural elements. Enjoy nature as it is and help ensure that future visitors can do the same.

Golden cereal fields, lush vineyards, and rivers and natural pools filled with crystal-clear water. The best time to visit Sierra de Guara (Aragón, Spain) is, without a doubt, late spring. 😍😍

"The organisation of this trip was absolutely excellent.
We were provided with a detailed itinerary and everything happened when it was supposed to.Bikes and support were fantastic and time was taken to instruct us and set them up to our specifications.
Accommodation was varied and interesting.Highlights for us were Molinaseca day-with magnificent descent down,Villafranca(fantastic reception from Danny and great meal) and our stay at Parada das Bestas in Palas De Reí.Everyday held its challenges and many delights thru the beautiful countryside.
The guidance from the Guibo app was a great support as well!

Really excellent and very attentive.
Any concerns were answered very quickly.
Very approachable and wouldn’t hesitate to use S-cape agian."
