Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, an autonomous region in north-east Spain.
How much do you know about Catalonia?
➡️ Catalonia covers roughly 32,000 square kilometres, making it slightly larger than Belgium
➡️ The region stretches from the Pyrenees mountains down to the Mediterranean coast
➡️ There are four provinces: Barcelona Province, Girona Province, Tarragona Province, and Lleida Province
➡️ Catalonia has over 580 km of coastline, including the Costa Brava north of Barcelona and the Costa Daurada, around Tarragona.
➡️ The population of Catalonia is around 7.7 million people, 1.7 million of which live in Barcelona
➡️ Catalonia has its own language, Catalan, which is widely spoken alongside Spanish.
➡️ Catalonia has its own flag, La Senyera, designed with four red horizontal stripes on a golden yellow background. You will often see variations of the flag including a star, which is showing support for Catalonia's independence from Spain.
➡️ Catalonia currently accounts for about 18.8% of Spain’s total GDP, making it the second-largest regional economy in Spain, just behind Madrid.
➡️ Catalan culture is quite different from the rest of Spain, with unique festivals and traditions such as the Castellers (human tower building), la sardana (traditional dance), el caganer (a pooping figure in the nativity scene).
