After 4 stays in Morocco, I don’t think I could ever get tired of this country.

One of the good things about returning to the same places is that you get to understand them a little better each time.

You start noticing the smaller details, the everyday moments, the things you might have overlooked on your first visit✨️

I am guilty of this one🤡 I have probably said it a 1000 times. But the more I thought about it, the less sense it made.

As much as I want to blend in with the destination I am visiting, and as much as I want to understand people's living conditions, I will never have the full picture or know what it is really like to be a local.

Also, the more I stay outside tourist areas, the more I notice that this can also have an dangerous impact because of touristification.

Also in some destinations, I can tell that local people are not always happy to see tourists coming to their neighborhoods and I don’t blame them.

I also noticed that for years, I wanted to meet the “authentic” (I hate this word) locals people with traditional habits, different clothing, modest lifestyles, etc.

It was so wrong, turning local people into props for my fantasy of what “local life” should look like.

At the end of the day, being a conscious tourist is a work in progress, but we all have the responsibility to keep learning.

Wanting to become a more eco-friendly and conscious traveler is essential. But sometimes, our good intentions don't have the impact we think they do.

Some actions are marketed as sustainable even though they aren't necessarily as sustainable as we think.

In this carousel, I share 5 examples that may seem like obvious eco-friendly choices but that are worth questioning.

A White person putting themselves in a mise en scène, surrounded by Black and Brown people, especially children looking at them with gratitude, happy that they have finally arrived, is not scarce content on social media.

Same with Reels where Westerners argue with local communities using a strong (but only apparently convincing) argument: my money is building your country.

All of this content has something in common: White Saviorism, a concept deeply rooted in colonialism and the narrative that Western societies came to “civilize” other countries.

The large boats disappeared and were replaced by planes. The colonial uniforms by caps and flip-flops. Religion, roads and “progress” by pens, English lessons and school construction.

But the pattern is the same: we bring what you lack, even if you don't actually lack it. We don’t mind. We don't ask. We don't listen. We simply project an idea of what your society should look like, and then come to help.

It may come from a good place. You may genuinely want to help, but without realizing it, you can still reproduce colonial patterns.

And yes, even if you're Brown or Black, you can be doing the same thing.

Over the last few years, I have seen many Reels of local communities around the world speaking out about losing access to their beaches while tourists are enjoying them.

This is not a new phenomenon, but with the acceleration of tourism in many destinations, it seems to be becoming increasingly common.

Yet, it's a topic that doesn't seem to attract much attention from mainstream audiences.

But as always when it comes to tourism, I think we, as travelers, can try to understand these issues so we can make more responsible choices.

At the same time, I also want to point out that governments, developers and investors have a bigger role to play. The loss of beach access isn't only caused by tourism.

Commercial or port activities, for instance, can also make coastal areas more difficult for residents to access.

Did you know that 80% of travelers visit just 10% of the world's tourist destinations?

⚠️So obviously, the pressure on these very sought-after destinations is huge and puts them in danger: strained resources, rising rents, environmental degradation…

The consequences are many, and they are serious.

At the same time, I understand why people still dream of visiting beautiful Barcelona, unique Venice, fascinating Oaxaca, or famous Ubud. It also feels unfair to tell today's travelers that they shouldn't visit places that thousands of people have already enjoyed.

The reality is even more complex because many people and local businesses depend on tourism for their livelihoods.

Personally, I think public institutions have the greatest responsibility when it comes to addressing the consequences of mass tourism. They have the power to regulate short-term rentals, manage visitor numbers, protect natural resources, and ensure that tourism benefits local communities.

The entire responsibility can’t fall on travelers' shoulders, but still… we have a part to play.

So the least we can do is make more conscious choices when we travel. In this carousel, I'm sharing a few ideas to help you do that.

I know things are changing but every time I open my Instagram I can’t help thinking they’re not changing fast enough. White faces still dominate the panorama.

It is the same during my travels, I rarely cross paths with Brown and Black people😬 This clearly tells me we still have a long way to go if we want the travel industry to become more inclusive, and it starts by representation.

So let’s add our little drop of water to the ocean.

This sentence often says more about the traveler than about the local communities.

They judge that material wealth is what matters most. And if someone has less of it, their happiness becomes surprising.

Sometimes, this sentence is also a way to feel better about our own lives.

But, people have every right to want better living conditions without having to give up their culture, identity, or community.

When I was young, I arrived at every destination with a huge checklist of things to do✅️

I was just jumping from one place to another because I was afraid I would never come back.

But I was tired, and I realized I was just ticking boxes on a sheet of paper, but I was not at all taking the time to enjoy and try to understand the place where I was.

So, years later, when I started traveling again, I chose to do it differently. Having a routine in a city that is not mine is my travel experience. I still had a list of things to see or do, but a much shorter one.

The rest of the time, I focused on simple things: taking coffee in quiet cafés, talking for hours with new friends, or just staring at the stars… And still… FOMO showed up.

Actually, it still does. I just find a way to quiet it.

Decolonizing travel is about reflection, curiosity, and a willingness to question our assumptions, but sometimes, it can feel a bit too theoretical, not grounded enough in practice.

Sometimes, you just need some guidance on what to do concretely.

That’s the reason why I created this carousel. I have already talked about some of these simple practices in previous posts, but I thought it could be useful to bring them together in one place for some practical guidance.
