ADVISORY: The Philippine Embassy in Spain reminds members of the Filipino community and other travelers in mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands to take necessary precautions during the total solar eclipse today, Wednesday, 12 August 2026.
The eclipse is expected to draw large numbers of visitors, particularly to areas along the path of totality. Increased traffic, road closures, and temporary access restrictions may be in place, especially in popular viewing locations.
TRAVEL AND ROAD SAFETY
• Avoid unnecessary travel, particularly to areas within or near the path of totality.
• If travel is necessary, plan your route in advance and allow extra time for possible traffic congestion, diversions, road closures, and access restrictions.
• Check the latest traffic information and road restrictions through the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) and follow instructions from local authorities.
• Some areas may temporarily restrict access to residents, authorized vehicles, or persons with appropriate documentation. Carry valid identification and, where applicable, proof of accommodation or residence.
• Travelers in the Balearic Islands should check the latest information on traffic restrictions and access controls. Those traveling to the airport are advised to allow considerably more time than usual.
• Spain is experiencing an elevated wildfire risk in several areas. Follow local authorities' instructions, observe fire restrictions, and avoid entering areas that have been closed for safety reasons.
ECLIPSE VIEWING SAFETY
Never look directly at the Sun without proper eye protection during the partial phases of the eclipse.
✅ Use eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer that complies with ISO 12312-2:2015. When purchasing in Spain/EU, look for the CE marking and follow the manufacturer's safety instructions.
✅ Inspect your eclipse glasses or viewer before use. Do not use them if they are scratched, torn, punctured, cracked, or otherwise damaged.
✅ Closely supervise children while they are viewing the eclipse.
❌ Do not use ordinary sunglasses, regardless of how dark they are.
❌ Do not use X-rays, photographic film, CDs, smoked glass, or homemade filters.
❌ Do not look at the Sun through a camera, telescope, binoculars, or other optical equipment without a proper solar filter designed specifically for that equipment.
DURING TOTALITY
If you are within the path of totality, you may look directly at the eclipse only during the brief period when the Moon completely covers the Sun's bright face.
Protective eyewear must be worn during the partial phases before and after totality. As soon as any part of the bright Sun becomes visible again, put your protective eyewear back on.
Those without suitable eclipse glasses may use an indirect viewing method, such as a pinhole projector, without looking directly at the Sun.
