Public transportation in Valencia is not expensive compared to cities in the US. If you have a refillable transit card it’s about 1€ a ride. No transit card, it’s 2€. Today I got the Bono Oro card. While it only works for the busses (which I use primarily) it’s unlimited rides for 20€ a year. A nice perk for us old goats here in Valencia!

Was at the celebration yesterday, commemorating the 600th anniversary of
The completion of the cathedral’s bell tower (Micalet).

The City Council organized a special concert by the Valencia Municipal Symphonic Band, featuring a performance of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. Although the original piece calls for the use of cannons, on this occasion the version was purely Valencian: the artillery shots were replaced by pyrotechnics and the accompaniment of the manual ringing of the Micalet bells.

I am in Trieste, Italy for a few days, before embarking on a cruise to Athens. By luck, I came across a tournament taking place in Trieste’s Grand Canal. The canal is nothing like the one in Venice, but still impressive. The tournament is Kayak Polo. Looks like lots of fun, and while it is gaining popularity in different parts of the world, it isn’t played in enough places yet, to become an Olympic sport. It sure beats the hell out of break dancing though, in my opinion. 😊

I’ve been told some of my posts are too lengthy. Therefore, today I share photos of my excursion to the Atlas Mountains, 4 canyons, a waterfall, and a something I never thought I’d do.

In the evenings, the main square of the Medina looks like a State Fair, without the rides. There is a plethora of activities, from market stands (food, spices, drinks, jewelry) to street performers (musicians, snake charmers, and monkeys), restaurants, and people selling fake Rolex watches, fake Apple products, sunglasses, toys, etc.
Speaking of food, the restaurants serve traditional Moroccan food, French inspired dishes, and international food with a Moroccan flair. I am one who believes, “when in Rome…” and so I stepped way out of my comfort zone for dinner tonight. Any guesses?

Took a walking tour of Marrakech today. Thought it was a small group tour, however it turned out to be a private tour. It was probably better because I learned more about the history and culture of Marrakech than I would have in a group setting. 4.5 hours and 11,000 steps in total Spent more money than I planned in the shops (of his friends), but have some excellent buys. Seeing the products being made on site was proof the products weren’t made in China. 🤣

In San Sebastián, there are more 5 star Michelin restaurants than any other city in Spain. They are famous for their pinxtos (pinchos), seafood, and steak. The chuleta (t-bone) is considered the best by far. How much would you pay per kg of chuleta. Put your guesses in the reply. 😊

On a tour today in the northern Basque region, our final stop was here at Gaztelugatxe and on the island is a hermitage dedicated to San Juan. I had no intention of making the venture, but I thought, “why not?”. I made it all the way down the long winding path to the bridge and all the way to the top. Going down was fine, but having to climb the mountain path to get back to the bus, is another story. I was fortunate that the tour leader and a guy from Italy supported me and helped me make it back. I know I will sleep well tonight!

2 interesting, very interesting things I’ve learned so far. Arriving yesterday on Vuelo Airlines, no one stood up when the fasten seat belt light was turned off. In addition, we left the plane in groups of 5 rows at a time. No crowding of the aisles and no one in a rushing or shoving. When I asked the flight attendant how they do this, he said the people in the north of Spain are very respectful. 2nd interesting thing, a lot of places are closed today. I figured it must be a holiday, so I looked online and it said no holidays in Spain today. I saw a guy leading a tour and asked him about the closures. He said today is the feast of St. Ignatius (founder of the Jesuits). When I told him I looked online it said there are no holidays today in Spain. His response, “this isn’t Spain!” The Basque region has its own language and while technically they are in Spain, they don’t consider themselves a part of it. There are other regions in Spain who also don’t consider themselves a part of the country. One is Castellón and another is Galicia.
