Fundació de Joves Navegants de Balears is a foundation in Mallorca working with young people to promote the nautical sector and to develop a love for the sea, especially youngsters who experience difficulties in social adaption.

To clarify the mainly incorrect information published yesterday, Wednesday, in a local Mallorcan newspaper regarding UK RYA qualifications:

- the UK is now included in Annex 9 which is a list of non EU countries whose qualifications are accepted by Spain for use on Spanish flagged yachts.
- the acceptance or not of individual qualifications is established by the flagstate. UK qualifications are acceptable on UK flagged yachts even when in Spanish waters.
- at the moment Annex 9 is only applicable to private qualifications enabling a British person with UK qualifications to come to Spain and charter a Spanish flagged yacht.
- the relevant authorities are continuing negotiations regarding acceptance or not of professional qualifications on Spanish flagged yachts.

It is totally untrue that Brexit is "Sinking the British yachting and nautical industry" in Mallorca. The industry is still booming thanks to the positive attitude and efforts by Spanish Authorities and local businesses. Spain and particularly the Balearics depend to a large extent on tourism and recognise the importance of nautical tourism for the economy.
In no way is Spain going to shoot itself in the foot by damaging the British Tourism market.

Here at Network, we are trying to make our little contribution in helping those who really need it in these strange times we find ourselves in. We are collecting office equipment which will be donated through “Yachting Gives Back” to the local Palma charity “Associació Tardor”
If you are in Mallorca and you have any unwanted computers, screens or even some office furniture or smaller items, please get in touch with us to arrange collection. Any items that you are not using any more and which are still in good condition can be at a great help to others. They also desperately need food donations such as dried goods, milk and baby food. Let us know if you have anything you would like to donate and we will arrange collection points.

EU Commission new guidelines regarding tourism.

The Balearic Government has expressed its satisfaction with the decision taken yesterday by the EU Commission to create new guidelines in order to reactivate tourism this summer.

The proposal submitted by the Commission is to gradually reopen EU borders in three phases with the intention of saving, even partially, this year’s tourist season. The suggestion is to gradually establish “Safe Corridors” between EU Regions which have complied with the sanitary controls and have officially controlled the spread of the pandemic to the satisfaction of the relevant Health Authorities.

The President of the Balearic Government considers the proposed system to be a positive move and has stated that the Balearics is a “safe destination” and thereby is prepared to once more receive tourists. The Government has suggested that it may be possible to eliminate the present requirement for 15 days quarantine for all travellers arriving from outside Spain and just apply the requirement to those people showing symptoms of the virus.

The Commission has also suggested the removal of the restriction at present in place that aircraft should leave centre seats free , thereby helping the airlines to re-activate their EU routes and adjust prices of flights accordingly. (Statistics relating to passenger movements through Palma airport show that there has been a drop of 99.6% during April 2020 compared to April 2019.)

Balearic Hotel and Tourism Groups have declared the EU recommendations “a powerful breath of fresh air” for Balearic tourism in general (including the Nautical Sector) and will reactivate the sector much quicker than expected.
