Cambridge Bay, Nunavut Canadian Arctic.

We connected with the elders of the village who are doing what they can to keep their culture alive. Many of them were born "on the land". That means in igloos and tents! Some were taken and forced to go to schools down south before coming back here. The elders were forthcoming in our search for Maud's traces. And they were also intrigued by Alma. They proposed to have a gathering on board with song, drum and dance. Terje gladly accepted and it became a very unique moment. This was not like the cringeworthy fake danceparty that was held for the cruise ship passengers in Gjoa Haven's sportshall. This was an honour to us as visitors taking a deep interest in the town's history.

Transiting the Northwest Passage is all about exploring. Today I enjoyed a solo ride through arctic tundra. A very unique and harsh environment, especially for those who live here permanently.

Once out on the open Baffin Sea, the icebergs were as big as islands and mostly far in between.
We crossed Melville Bay passing Holmes Island aiming for Cape York as Amundsen describes in his journal. Only, their conditions were very different. Although they were a month later in the year (1903) they encountered sea ice and dense fog. They were elated when suddenly the fog cleared and Cape York revealed itself right in front of them. How they navigated so precisely is a little bit beyond me!
For us Cape York dictated increased attention. Although there was no sign of sea ice (frozen sea water) the ice breaking off from the multitude of glaciers in the area all congregated around the cape. And this time we were under sail. Nearer to land the windpressure increased, so we were accelerating too!
We passed a beautiful, huge iceberg which was black at the top. It had dragged sediment with it from the mountains before flipping upside down. Mesmerizing! But soon we discovered how treacherous this black ice can be! Small chunks of them in an aggitated sea state are hard to spot!
