The growth in Russian owned yachts has been spectacular in the last 20 years. Now probably halted for a couple of years, until Russia gets rid of Putin and repays the Ukraine for the damage done. I have never worked or dealt with a Russian yacht nor would I. and a Ukrainian from Odessa still owes me 300 euro plus 10 years interest!

At the risk of being sued no one in their right mind should take a Hanse yacht more than 60 miles offshore. they simply arn't built for purpose. Ask any boatyard that has done a repair on a Hanse. Indeed i know of a couple of yards that refuse to work on them.

The basic lesson to draw from this is unfortunately Bavaria's are not boats for ocean crossings despite what is written on the box. The other lesson is prepare for sea properly before leaving the harbour mouth, and if you are not in an area with very reliable forecasts be extra vigilant. Having said that we once left on a November midnight for Bermuda and two days into the passage a hurricane appeared from nowhere with the same destination as us Bermuda , we arrived 30 hours ahead fortunately, it was an Oyster 66, had that been a smaller yacht it would have been a different story..

At night lights can be difficult to assess, that is why AIS and radar chartplotters need to be on deck so instant assessment can be made. I have seen light that looked like next door but were four five miles away, and others that liked miles away but were next door..I raced at night across the English Channel for 6 years with no Radar or AIS in the eighties so have a good idea of whats what at night . But one cannot be too careful.

Always remember ....If you see red and green, take a chance and go between!!!!

Be very careful about what boat you sail and where. The western Atlantic in September October is the most dangerous place of all. and in a boat this small almost su***de.

This amazing story of sheer incompetence by the US Navy is mind blowing, however Yachts are also been fitted with over complex systems that make accidents more likely. such as Raymarine's fitting the autopilot control to every screen on the boat. The problem is that the guys who design this stuff never actually use it, so have no conception of the conditions the gear is used in.
