Having 3D printing in-house has become a really useful part of how we develop custom rigging components.

We can print sacrificial prototypes to proof a design and check fit and functionality before committing to the final component, as well as producing items such as custom washers immediately rather than waiting for outsourced manufacture. It means we can make adjustments quickly, reduce material waste and, importantly, identify potential fitment issues before they reach final production.

For custom work, being able to go from design to a physical part in-house makes a big difference to turnaround and accuracy.

Every tow line test generates valuable data. Using Crosby load sensors allows us to measure the forces being generated throughout the test, giving an accurate picture of how the tow line and towing arrangement perform under load. Rather than relying on assumptions, decisions can be supported by real measured data.

It's another example of how testing continues to improve the understanding, safety and performance of towing operations.

Watch those numbers during the test... it's quite incredible what loads these systems are capable of holding.

That's exactly why load tests and drop tests are so important. If lifting equipment is ever going to fail, you want it to happen in a controlled test environment, not during an operation onboard.

No two tenders are exactly the same, which is why every custom lifting system starts with accurate measurements.

For S/Y Athena, we travelled to Hamburg to take the final onboard measurements for a brand new tender. Once everything had been checked and confirmed, we returned to Palma, manufactured the lifting equipment, completed certification and had it shipped in less than 72 hours.

Getting the measurements right onboard is what makes the installation straightforward when the equipment arrives.

Heavy lifting isn't limited to masts and rigging. Moving containers might not be part of a rig refit, but the principles are exactly the same. Every lift is planned, every load is controlled and every movement is carried out with the same precision and attention to detail.

The team recently relocated our office and workshop containers into their new position within STP Shipyard.

Positioning a spar of this size onto its support stands isn't simply a case of lowering the crane. The spar is guided into its exact position through a series of small, controlled movements, with the crane operator and rigging team working together until it is fully supported and correctly aligned for transport.

It's a stage that receives very little attention, but it's essential to protecting the spar before inspection and servicing begin.

Easy does it... Using a tow bar and vehicle keeps the headstay moving in a perfectly straight line as it's transferred onto the transport trolleys. It's a practical handling solution that gives the team complete control over a component of this length throughout the move.
