M/Y Elysian’s tender garage crane Dyneema cable replaced and certified in accordance with Lloyd’s requirements for lifting equipment.

The Dyneema cable is a working part of the lifting system and needs the same attention as the crane itself. Condition, termination and correct installation all matter, particularly on equipment routinely handling a tender.

New crane cable installed, the system inspected, tested and the certification completed.

Exactly the sort of work that needs to be kept on top of, not left until something starts showing signs of failure.

Now that is a load cell.

40 tonnes, and a serious piece of kit for crane load testing.

When you’re testing lifting equipment at this level, you need equipment that can accurately measure and record the forces being applied throughout the test. This one gives us the capacity to take on some of the much larger crane testing work coming through RSB.

This will earn its keep.

S/Y Margarete Ann’s tender pole in for its inspection, load test and certification.

Inspection first, then progressively loading the pole while monitoring the actual forces through the load cell. We tested it through its working positions to make sure the complete system was behaving as it should under load.

This is the important bit with load testing. It’s not simply about applying a weight and seeing if it holds. We want to know what is happening throughout the system as the load increases and as the geometry changes.

Inspected, load tested and certified.

What else do you do on a beautiful Friday morning before the weekend starts?

Step Dahlak’s mast, get her tuned up and ready to sail, pack the tools away… and call b**r o’clock once the job is complete and the client is happy.

This is exactly the sort of preventative maintenance we want to see built into a yacht’s regular rigging programme.

In Tivat, Montenegro, we carried out the full service and inspection of the crow’s nest aboard the mighty S/Y Black Pearl, following the manufacturer’s specification throughout.

Regular servicing gives us the opportunity to inspect the complete system properly, identify wear as it develops and keep the equipment operating as intended rather than waiting for a problem to appear.

Good comms make a big difference when you’ve got someone working aloft.

Bluetooth headsets give the guys in the rig constant, direct communication with the team running the job on deck. They can talk normally, hear exactly what’s happening below and respond immediately without having to shout over the radio and everything else going on around them.

The important bit is that those comms stay dedicated to the job. The rest of the crew can carry on working without breaking that line between the person aloft and the team below.

This makes working aloft a lot safer and the whole operation run much better.

Up close, checking the structure, fittings and connections properly. At height, and with the loads involved, there’s no substitute for getting eyes and hands directly onto the equipment.

This is how you build the best possible team.

Franco is one of our Senior Project Managers, with a huge amount of sailing and technical experience behind him. When he’s out on the water with the team, he uses that time to pass it on.

Talking through what he’s seeing. Explaining the decisions being made. Sharing the practical knowledge that comes from years spent on boats and working with rigs.

A lot to get right before a main mast leaves the ground.

Aurelius’ main mast was ready for the step, and the team were getting everything laid out, run and exactly where they wanted it before the crane took the weight.

Halyards clear, stays ready, lifting gear checked and everyone knowing what happened next.

Because once the mast is hanging on the hook, you don’t want to be looking for anything you may have forgotten to take care of.
