Before you leave the hotel, take your rental bike for a short ride somewhere quiet.
⠀
A few minutes getting comfortable can make a big difference to your first day on the Camino de Santiago by bike.
⠀
1️⃣ FIND YOUR SADDLE HEIGHT
With your foot on the pedal at its lowest point, your knee should still be slightly bent.
⠀
You should pedal comfortably without rocking your hips or stretching to reach.
⠀
2️⃣ GET A FEEL FOR THE BRAKES
Learn which lever controls the front brake and which controls the rear.
⠀
At low speed, apply them gently and progressively so you get used to how the bike slows down.
⠀
3️⃣ TRY THE GEARS ON FLAT GROUND
Practise changing gear while pedalling lightly.
⠀
Get familiar with the easier gears before you need them on a climb, and ease the pressure on the pedals when shifting.
⠀
4️⃣ MEET YOUR ELECTRIC ASSISTANCE
If you’re riding an e-bike, start with a low assistance level.
⠀
Try the different modes somewhere quiet and notice how the motor responds as you pedal.
⠀
5️⃣ NEED A WALKTHROUGH?
Our YouTube videos explain the process step by step.
⠀
Watch them before setting off, and replay anything you want to practise.
