Not the start to the week I wanted

Ringo woke in a state of distress this morning so I had to run him to the vet where he had to have his a**l glands drained!

Nothing serious, just a nice vet bill.

He just polished off a huge lunch and is resting!

Not the best start to the week!!! 😂

I was invited to collaborate with SailGP on some social media reels and, although I’d done my research beforehand, I wasn’t prepared for the sheer scale of it.

Thousands of people, food trucks, DJs and an incredible atmosphere down at Valencia Marina. Watching these extraordinary F50 yachts racing at breathtaking speeds right in front of you, with the Mediterranean and Playa de las Arenas as a backdrop, was spectacular.

This was SailGP’s first visit to Valencia and I think it’s a fantastic addition to the city, bringing real international prestige and showcasing Valencia at its very best.

Even better, SailGP returns on 4–5 September 2027. Definitely recommended. Just remember the hat and sun cream!

VALENCIA WAS NAMED THE NOISIEST CITY IN EUROPE AND 42 YEARS LATER, HAS ANYTHING REALLY CHANGED?

In 1984, researchers from Valencia’s Polytechnic University studied 31 streets across the city centre and found some locations exceeding 80 decibels for at least 12 hours a day. Their conclusion was extraordinary: Valencia could be considered the noisiest city in Europe. Guillem de Castro, Sant Vicent Màrtir, Gran Via de les Germanies and Quart were among the worst streets recorded.

Nearly twenty years later, things weren’t looking much quieter. A major 2003 study comparing Spanish cities put Valencia at the top for noise pollution, recording an average of 73.3 decibels across its road network. Only around 1% of the locations measured were below 65 dB, while roughly a third exceeded 75 dB.

For perspective, normal conversation is around 60 dB, while busy traffic commonly reaches 70–80 dB. And because the decibel scale is logarithmic, those apparently small increases matter considerably more than you might think.

Today, it would be misleading to simply declare Valencia Europe’s noisiest city because there is no reliable modern European league table awarding that dubious honour. But Valencia certainly hasn’t become silent. Traffic, scooters, construction, bin collections, packed terraces, church bells and fireworks all contribute to a city where peace and quiet can sometimes feel like a luxury.

Yet perhaps that’s also part of Valencia. This is a city that lives outdoors. People talk across balconies, terraces stay busy late into the evening, scooters buzz through narrow streets, bells ring and fireworks appear to require remarkably little justification.

Maybe Valencia doesn’t simply make noise. Valencia lives loudly.

So, 42 years after being labelled Europe’s noisiest city, what is the ONE noise in Valencia that drives you absolutely mad?

For the first time ever, SailGP arrived in Valencia. This weekend, the world’s high-speed F50 catamarans raced across the waters of the Marina, bringing one of sailing’s most spectacular competitions to the city. These incredible boats can reach speeds approaching 100 km/h, with some of the world’s finest sailors battling just metres from the waterfront. Valencia has always lived with the Mediterranean, but this weekend the sea feels just a little bit faster. SailGP

People are STILL messaging me to tell me that peas aren’t an ingredient of Arroz al Horno even though I NEVER SAID THEY WERE!!!! Facebook translate is to blame!

I’m up to 218 messages and comments informing me of the fact now. I’m losing the will to live!!!!!!!!

Here are some peas! Enjoy! Just don’t put them in your Arroz al Horno! 😂

And a rather elegant looking pigeon arrived too.
