Obituary: Henning Wind (1937–2025)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Henning Wind on July 20, 2025, at the age of 88. Denmark has lost one of its greatest sailors — a role model, a pioneer, and a passionate ambassador for the sport of sailing.
Henning Wind will forever hold a place in the history of Danish sport. He achieved international recognition when he won a bronze medal at the 1964 Olympic Games in the Finn class, having also represented Denmark in the 1968 Olympics. His talent, determination, and tactical brilliance made him one of the most accomplished sailors of his generation.
But Henning was more than an outstanding athlete. He was a visionary. he founded Winner Optimist, a project that would go on to shape youth sailing around the world. Driven by his passion for the future of the sport, Henning created a platform that introduced tenthousands of children and young sailors to the water through the Optimist dinghy — now one of the most widely used training boats globally.
Henning was deeply respected not only for his sporting achievements but also for his modesty, generosity, and inclusive spirit. He inspired generations of sailors, coaches, and enthusiasts, and his impact on Danish and international sailing will live on far beyond his passing.
Henning is survived by his beloved wife, Tove, with whom he shared a lifelong partnership filled with love, support, and a shared commitment to the sailing community. Our thoughts are with Tove, the family, and all those who had the privilege of knowing Henning.
He will be dearly missed — on the water and in our hearts.
May Henning Wind’s memory be honored and cherished.
