Did you know that thousands of Spanish words have Arabic origins? 👀🇪🇸

The influence dates back centuries to Muslim rule in Al-Andalus, leaving a lasting mark not only on Spain’s architecture, food and culture, but also its language.

From words you might already recognise to ones you’d never guess came from Arabic, the connection is still heard in everyday Spanish today.

How many of these did you already know? 👇

What an honour it is to stand here in Samarkand, at what is widely accepted to be the resting place of the cousin and beloved companion of the Prophet ﷺ.

Quthm ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه travelled to Samarkand in the 7th century, long before there were masjids here and before the adhan would become widespread.

He came with the message of Islam—
and gave his life in its service.

He didn’t live to see the fruit of his labour, but the legacy he helped begin laid the foundations for Samarkand to one day rise as a centre of Islamic knowledge and civilisation.

Visiting places like this isn’t just about seeing the beautiful architecture—it’s about reconnecting with the people and places that shaped this land, and by extension, our ummah.
