Who is responsible for VGM (Verified Gross Mass)?

Before a container can be loaded onto a vessel, SOLAS regulations require the shipper to provide a Verified Gross Mass (VGM). Failure to submit an accurate VGM can result in cargo rollovers, delays, additional costs, and safety risks at the terminal.

Key points:
➡️ VGM is mandatory for all packed export containers.

➡️The shipper named on the Bill of Lading is responsible for providing the VGM.

➡️Incorrect or late VGM submissions may cause containers to miss the intended vessel.

➡️Accurate weight declarations contribute to supply chain safety and compliance.

Stackable pallets:

A pallet is considered stackable when another pallet or cargo unit can safely be placed on top of it during transportation. This allows carriers and forwarders to make better use of the available space.

Non-stackable pallets:

Non-stackable cargo cannot safely have another pallet placed on top. This means the space above the cargo may remain unusable, even though it is physically available.

This can lead to higher freight costs, reduced capacity, revised quotations, equipment shortages, booking delays, and additional handling requirements, particularly when cargo is non-stackable.

In international shipping, a Telex Release allows cargo to be released at destination without the consignee having to present the physical Original Bill of Lading.

The original B/L is surrendered at origin, and the carrier electronically authorises the destination office to release the cargo.

For the customer, this can mean faster cargo release, less paperwork and lower risk of delays caused by couriering original documents

Original B/L = physical document and, in many cases, control/title over the cargo.

Telex Release = electronic release after surrender of the original B/L.

For freight forwarders and importers, choosing the right document/release method can make a real difference to both cash flow and avoiding unnecessary storage or demurrage costs.

Proper container/trailer stuffing is more than just loading cargo, it protects your shipment, reduces costs, and prevents unnecessary delays.

➡️ Distribute the weight evenly to avoid axle and stability issues.

➡️Consider stackability and never overload weaker cartons.

➡️Secure the cargo with dunnage, straps, airbags, or blocking to prevent movement in transit.

➡️Protect cargo from moisture, vibration, and impact damage.

➡️Leave no empty spaces where cargo can shift during sea transport.

A well-loaded container/trailer means fewer claims, safer transport, and happier customers.

How do you ensure cargo safety before sealing a container?

Transporting Dangerous Goods (DG) requires strict compliance with IATA DGR (Air Freight) and the IMDG Code (Sea Freight). Incorrect classification, packing, marking, or documentation can have serious safety and legal consequences.

✅ Key points:

➡️ Some Class 1 Explosives are prohibited on passenger aircraft and heavily restricted by sea.

➡️Class 6.2 Infectious Substances require special approval and packaging.

➡️Class 7 Radioactive Materials require specialist handling, approvals, and trained Personnel.

➡️Consequences of non-compliance are substantial:
Shipment rejection or cargo detention.
Heavy fines and regulatory penalties

Container damage is something every freight forwarder, carrier, and cargo owner encounters sooner or later. While some damage is purely cosmetic, other issues can compromise cargo safety, delay shipments, and lead to unexpected repair costs or liability disputes.

Common types of container damage include:
-Dented or punctured side panels
-Damaged doors or locking mechanisms
-Holes in the roof allowing water ingress

What should you do if you discover damage?
-Inspect the container before loading or collecting it from the terminal.
-Take clear photos and videos from multiple angles.
-Report the damage immediately to the depot, shipping line, or terminal.

As we move through Summer 2026, transport planners face one of the most restrictive road freight environments of the year due to widespread weekend, holiday, and seasonal truck bans across Europe.

➡️ Germany / France – Summer weekend & holiday truck bans intensify (Sat–Sun restrictions, July–Aug peak + national holidays).

➡️ Italy – Strict summer driving bans (Sat daytime + full Sunday restrictions, heavy July–Aug enforcement).

➡️Austria – Alpine transit limits with night driving bans + strong weekend controls (Brenner corridor impact).

➡️Poland – Weekend & holiday restrictions for 12t+ vehicles, tight Friday–Sunday operational windows.
