🌱 According to World Economic Forum, over half of the world’s GDP is moderately or highly dependent on nature. This makes nature and biodiversity no longer a secondary thought for sustainable development, but critical for its success.

brought together Nordic and international actors to explore how finance and expertise can advance biodiversity and nature-positive solutions.

“In many countries, the climate has fallen far down on the political agenda, driven primarily by competing economics, crises and geopolitical tensions. We need new ideas, new ways to mobilise funds for climate adaptation in less-developed countries. Nature is our best and most cost-effective tool to adapt to climate change,” explained Monika Rubin, Denmark’s Minister for Social Affairs and Minister for Nordic Cooperation.

Nature-positive finance initiatives include organic agriculture, forest restoration, and sustainable fisheries. For example, mangrove restoration can strengthen coastal resilience, while wetlands restoration can help protect cities by reducing flood risks and supporting natural water management.

Last month, NDF's Managing Director Satu Santala https://www.linkedin.com/company/84046/admin/page-posts/published/?share=true # visited Rwanda's first automated upper-air weather station in Huye to see firsthand the progress made by Meteo Rwanda through Systematic Observations Financing Facility (SOFF) https://www.linkedin.com/company/84046/admin/page-posts/published/?share=true # support. 🌦️

The station marks a major milestone for the country's meteorological services and strengthening its contribution to the global weather and climate observing system.

Upper-air observations provide essential data that improve weather forecasts and early warning systems. As Rwanda prepares to share these observations internationally, the country's data will not only strengthen national forecasting but also contribute to the global exchange of meteorological data, helping reduce forecast uncertainty worldwide. 🌍

🌱 In Rwanda, where many livelihoods depend on agriculture, more accurate weather information helps communities anticipate risks, make informed decisions and reduce the impacts of climate-related hazards.

SOFF funding has enabled Meteo Rwanda to invest in upper-air weather balloon equipment and upgrade several ground weather stations across the country. The collaboration between UNDP https://www.linkedin.com/company/84046/admin/page-posts/published/?share=true #, the Finnish Meteorological Institute https://www.linkedin.com/company/84046/admin/page-posts/published/?share=true # and Meteo Rwanda has also been instrumental to the project's success. NDF is pleased to contribute to these efforts through its support for the SOFF programme.

A big thank you to Aimable Gahigi, Director General of Meteo Rwanda, for facilitating the visit and for the ongoing work towards a more resilient future. 🤝

🌿 NDF commits EUR 500,000 to advance climate and peace initiatives

NDF is joining forces with Peace Dividend Initiative, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, Incofin Investment Management and UNDP to design the Climate and Peace Investment Fund (CPIF), a new impact investing strategy that increases access to finance for entrepreneurs building climate and peace-supporting businesses in lower-income countries and conflict-affected regions. 🌍

"One of NDF's priorities is to ensure that climate finance reaches the communities most vulnerable to climate change, which are too often underserved by existing financing models. By supporting CPIF from an early stage and working alongside our partners, we are helping to build the foundations for a credible investment strategy that can unlock capital at scale in lower-income countries and conflict-affected contexts, where access to climate finance remains far too limited," says Isabel Leroux, Program Manager at NDF.

We look forward to working with all partners on this ambitious initiative. 🤝

Yesterday, NDF’s Managing Director Satu Santala participated in the panel discussion following the WIDER Annual Lecture, where Edward Miguel delivered the 30th Annual Lecture on “Can Africa escape the climate–conflict–poverty trap?” The Lecture explored how rising temperatures, armed conflict, and weak economic growth can reinforce one another.

🌱 During the panel, Satu addressed the need to scale up adaptation in Africa, particularly as El Niño is expected to exacerbate existing vulnerabilities. She pointed out to NDF-supported initiatives such as the Hardest-to-Reach Initiative, ARCAFIM and InsuResilience as examples of how climate finance contributes to building sustainable economies and long-term resilience.

Satu stressed the importance of building new partnerships, including with the private sector and philanthropies, and noted that encouraging new collaborations are already taking shape. 🤝

A warm thank you to UNU-WIDER for the invitation and to Edward Miguel and the fellow panellists for an engaging discussion!

🌱 Nature and biodiversity are no longer secondary considerations: they are essential to climate resilience, effective risk management, and lasting development impact. In Nordic Climate Dialogues’ third session, we were pleased to welcome Magnus Nyström and Koloina Ramaromandray for two inspiring keynote speeches.

Magnus set the scene by exploring the close links between healthy ecosystems, climate resilience and sustainable development, reflecting on what science tells us. He highlighted resilience as the capacity to live and develop with change. It is essential for navigating accelerating risks and requires balancing the capacities to cope, adapt and transform. Investing in resilience today, he noted, helps reduce the costs of tomorrow.

Joining us from Miarakap in Madagascar, Koloina first provided an overview of the country, highlighting that seven in ten jobs depend directly on land, forests and the sea. She emphasised the close link between poverty and environmental degradation: "Poverty drives nature loss, and nature loss drives poverty". Koloina stressed the importance of backing bold entrepreneurs and shared practical examples of private sector investments in nature and biodiversity that create jobs while protecting ecosystems. As these businesses depend on healthy ecosystems to thrive, they create a virtuous circle in which economic development and nature conservation reinforce one another.

Building on these perspectives, our panel discussed how climate finance can better integrate nature into investment decisions and implementations, and how nature-positive finance can move from principle to practical, investable solutions. 📈🌍

Many thanks to all our speakers and participants for these insightful conversations!

🌍 How can blended finance and catalytic capital accelerate climate and nature outcomes, helping shape markets, mobilise private investment and enable systemic change?

At the session From Concessional to Catalytic – Making Climate Finance Deliver at Scale, we brought together perspectives from public finance, private capital and impact investing to discuss what it takes to make finance truly catalytic. 💡 The discussion underlined that catalytic capital is most powerful when it helps unlock capital that would otherwise remain on the sidelines — while supporting market creation, investor confidence and long-term climate and nature impact.

As one of our panelists, Jacqueline Novogratz, Founder and CEO of Acumen noted: "The world does not need more money moving around the same places. We need capital willing to reach the places where climate risk and poverty meet, and to go earlier, stay longer and adapt to the challenges we face."

Thank you to our speakers for contributing to this important conversation! 🤝

🚀 The second edition of Nordic Climate Dialogues is now underway — Welcome!

In a more uncertain and divided world, Nordic climate leadership matters more than ever. Today, Nordic voices come together to explore what Nordic leadership means — and how cooperation can turn shared values into action. 🧭

As Satu Santala, NDF’s Managing Director, says, it is about moving from ambition to implementation, supporting scalable and credible solutions, and showing that values and practical delivery can reinforce each other.

“Nordic countries may not be the largest players, but they bring trust, credibility, practical solutions and a strong belief that climate action must go hand in hand with inclusion, resilience and shared responsibility,” she says.

Today’s dialogues are a chance to listen, learn and build Nordic partnerships for stronger joint Nordic . 🤲
