Learning Journey in Ireland: Exploring Regenerative Practices on Day Two

On Tuesday, April 28, the REGENERATE Interreg project brought together partners and stakeholders from Finland, Iceland, and Sweden for an immersive learning journey in Ireland. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Cuilcagh Lakelands Global Geopark, the second day of the visit focused on experiencing sustainable tourism practices and community-led initiatives firsthand.

A Journey of Collaboration and Growth: Day 3 in County Cavan

The final day of the REGENERATE Interreg learning journey brought partners and stakeholders from Finland, Iceland, and Sweden together for a dynamic wrap-up in County Cavan on Wednesday, April 29. Building on the immersive experiences of the previous days, the final itinerary emphasized reflection, capturing insights, and exploring community-led eco-tourism.

From Tranquility to Adventure to Unique Heritage and Genuine Hospitality – A great start to Regenerate Learning Journey in Ireland!
The first day of the Ireland learning journey started in good weather. After long travel from their own countries, stakeholders and partners from Finland, Iceland, and Sweden arrived early in the morning in Dublin, hopped on the bus, and were transferred to Cavan County, where our Ireland partner from the Cuilcagh Lakelands Global Geopark awaited their arrival. A great start to the Regenerate Learning Journey in Ireland!

REGENERATE Stakeholder Learning Journey, Ireland
The NPA REGENERATE project is driving a regenerative tourism mindset that builds resilient communities and preserves the unique heritage of our Northern Periphery and Arctic region. REGENERATE partners from each participating project region of Sweden, Finland, and Iceland arrived in Ireland for a learning journey that will introduce them to regenerative tourism practices, tools, and approaches being used in County Cavan, Ireland, to contribute to the regeneration of their natural, economic, and cultural resources.

REGENERATE tourism project partner, Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark in Cavan County Council, has an established Regenerative Tourism Business Network, which, through multiple training programs in 2020, 2022, and 2024, has brought together 32 members within its Network, all of which share the common goal of being a more sustainable business. The Network has a wide range of businesses from accommodation and activity providers to producers and retailers.

Partners from Visit Reykjanes and GeoCamp (Iceland), ProxyLab and Karelia UAS (Finland), Gold of Lapland (Sweden), and Cavan County Council (Ireland) met in Iceland to plan the next steps.

The partnership also visited the Icelandic Tourism Cluster in Reykjavik. We attended two interesting presentations about Iceland’s tourism journey and simple regenerative ideas that can help improve tourism in Europe.

The REGENERATE project aims to support more sustainable tourism in the NPA region by creating travel hubs and helping destinations develop local tourism strategies that benefit local people.
