How far do you want to fly? How hot do you want it? Beach and switch-off, or wildlife, culture and adventure? And how comfortable are you with different weather patterns and flight routings? The answer is different for everyone.

These are all things I consider when helping my clients find the right winter escape – as well as looking at how we can build in flexibility wherever possible.

These are the trips I’ve found really reward the early planners 🗓️

It’s not always about securing the best price. More often, it’s about having the best choice of accommodation, experiences and itineraries, and giving yourself the time to create a trip that feels just right.

Whether it’s a small safari camp with only a handful of tents, a FIFA World Cup itinerary that needs careful planning around matches and host cities, or an RV adventure where campsites book up months in advance, some trips simply work better with a little more forward planning.

I hope this is helpful if you’re dreaming about one of these experiences in the future. ✨

And a little insider tip… for some of these trips, you don’t necessarily need to wait until flights are released before starting the planning process. In certain cases, securing accommodation or key elements first can actually be the best approach.

One thing I’ve learnt from planning holidays is that everyone has their ‘thing’ 😄

I love a beach in a bay… I like that they often feel more sheltered, the water is usually calmer and it can be easier to keep an eye on the kids than on a long stretch of open coastline.

One of my colleagues at Travel Counsellors once told me she really dislikes a hotel with a square-shaped pool. So don’t think me strange for asking about pool preferences 😂

Sometimes clients tell me they want an all-inclusive, only for me to discover that what they really love is wandering into town in the evening, choosing a different restaurant each night and not being tied to meal times.

For others it’s:

🚆 Train travel over driving

🏖️ Sand over pebbles

🚢 Large cruise ships only

🌍 Fewer Brits around

🏖 A lively beach rather than a secluded one

🧳 Unpacking once and staying put

Most people think it’s the lodge.

Yes the atmosphere, location, facilities are incredibly important. For me, it’s not the first thing I lock down.

I’ve had quite a few safari enquiries in my inbox lately and I absolutely love planning them. Horseback safaris, honeymoons, family safari.

When planning a safari, I’m thinking about:

👉 The right parks and the right amount of time in each park

👉 Minimising unnecessary travel

🦏 The type of wildlife experience my clients want

👉 The balance between budget and the experience

👉 And, most importantly, who is looking after them on the ground. This is the make or break. A luxury lodge won’t make up for bad guiding.

Whether it’s a luxury safari or making a more modest budget work as hard as possible, the process is exactly the same for me.

Years later, most people don’t remember the thread count of the sheets.

They remember the guide who found the leopard!!

This clip of my son is three years old. If he was looking for adventure then, imagine what he’s looking for now...😅

Beach holidays might sound simple but the challenge is pleasing every member of the family… and that’s the same challenge for every type of holiday!

🌊 My son wants somewhere he can jump, dive and be active all day.

🤿 My daughter loves snorkelling and spotting marine life.

🪏My youngest daughter loves to run around in the sand all day

🍽️ I love great local restaurants, sightseeing, beautiful views, beaches in a bay, boutique hotels…

🏝️My husband is super easy going and happy if everyone else is happy.. and entertained 😜😜

And we ALL want experiences we can enjoy together.

The challenge isn’t choosing a destination.

The challenge is finding somewhere that delivers all of those things in one trip!

And that’s just a beach holiday! 😅

When you’re planning a safari, a multi-centre itinerary, a ski trip or an adventure holiday, there are even more moving parts to consider.

That’s why one of the first things I ask my clients isn’t, “Where do you want to go?”

It’s, “What does everyone in your family enjoy?”

Because the best holidays aren’t about finding the perfect destination.They’re about finding the right destination for the people travelling.
