FlexFuel FAQ | Unicorn Aviation ✈️
We’ve collected the most common questions about FlexFuel technology — what it does, how it works in aviation, and why it matters for light aircraft and ULM operators.

❓ What is FlexFuel? FlexFuel is a technology that allows an engine to run natively on different types of gasoline and ethanol blends.
With Unicorn Aviation’s fuel injection system, the engine can operate with fuels such as 95 E10, 98, 100LL, E85 and even high-ethanol blends.
In simple terms: FlexFuel gives the aircraft more fuel flexibility without requiring the pilot to manually recalibrate the system every time the fuel type changes.

❓ Can FlexFuel be used on any aircraft? No. Engines are not FlexFuel by default.
FlexFuel capability requires a dedicated conversion: we retrofit the existing engine with our electronic fuel injection system, which measures fuel composition and adjusts injection parameters automatically.
This technology has been known in the automotive world for years. Unicorn Aviation is among the first companies adapting this principle for light aircraft and ULM aviation.

❓ What are the advantages of FlexFuel in aviation? FlexFuel helps pilots and operators work with a wider fuel choice, especially when flying routes where one specific fuel type may not always be available.
Key benefits include:
• more flexibility in fuel planning • potential reduction in operating costs • support for more modern fuel blends • reducing of CO2 up to 79%

❓ Do I need to replace the engine to install FlexFuel? No, not necessarily.
In many cases, Unicorn Aviation performs a retrofit of the existing engine and installs its own electronic fuel injection system.
For new projects, it is also possible to choose an engine already equipped with the Unicorn Aviation injection system.

❓ How does FlexFuel differ from standard EFI? Standard EFI is usually configured for one main fuel type.
FlexFuel goes further: it detects the fuel blend and automatically adjusts injection parameters in real time. This allows the engine to work with different gasoline and ethanol blends without manual recalibration by the pilot.
FlexFuel is not about “using anything.” It is about giving light aircraft and ULM operators more fuel options through a properly designed injection system.

When people ask us, “Can Unicorn EFI be installed on my aircraft?”, our first question is different:
Which engine do you have?
Today, Unicorn EFI supports the following engine families:
• Rotax 912 ULS
• Rotax 912 iS
• Rotax 914
• Rotax 915
• Rotax 916
• Zhongsheng (Rotax 912-compatible)

Our systems are designed for ULM and Experimental aircraft and are already installed on platforms including the Shark, VL3, XL8, EuroFOX, and Savannah.

When designing our system, we used the Shark as a reference platform, as it is one of the most compact aircraft in its class. Its extremely limited engine bay makes it an ideal benchmark for validating installation feasibility across a wide range of aircraft.

We’re also developing EFI solutions for Lycoming and Continental engine families. These projects are currently in development and will be available for both experimental and certified aircraft.
