A wonderful guest changeover in Nancy. After the provisioning, cleaning and maintenance, a time to relax on deck, watch the sun set over the port enjoying some wonderful antipasti and a burrata from Nancy’s Central Market, before wandering into Place Stanislas to see its brand new free light show! An obligatory sundowner at cafe Foy followed by just a couple of scoops of icy cold gorgeousness from the amazing gelato cafe, set us up for a good nights sleep, ready for tomorrow’s new guests. What another amazing day in Nancy, France. ⚡️⚡️

Eggs and Bacon by the canal?

One of the joys of travelling slowly through Lorraine aboard Barge Nilaya is noticing the tiny details that most people speed past.

This little wildflower is growing on the canal bank beside today’s mooring. At first glance it looks almost orchid-like, with its vivid orange and yellow blooms, but it is actually Bird’s-foot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), a member of the pea family rather than the orchid family.

Often known in England as “Eggs and Bacon” because of its cheerful yellow and orange flowers, Bird’s-foot Trefoil is one of the most important wildflowers for bees, butterflies and other pollinators. Later in the season its seed pods form little clusters that resemble a bird’s foot, giving the plant its unusual name.

It is a common sight along the waterways of France, but like so many things in nature, it rewards those who take the time to stop and look closely.

One more small treasure discovered beside the canal on our journey through Lorraine.

21 years ago, I sat on a bench in a small Vosges village called Chaumousey with three newfound acquaintances. Nilaya is moored in front of us.

Little was I to know, that over the intervening years, Stef, Bud, and Josef (to my left) would all go on to become friends, but more importantly ’Crew’.

Beloved by different guests at different times, they all have a special place in my heart.

Bud sadly passed away from cancer far too young, Stef became Isabelle and my ‘Best man’ at our wedding in 2013, and Josef, the environmental forest protecting Canadian eco warrior he is today.

Paths cross, lives change as a result and the effect of each and every such encounter changes the world’s future just a little bit. In my case, a lot!

That little wooden bench, like all the people on it, were huge components of my Nilaya adventure and I thank and love you all for the parts you played. Isabelle of course, the best and finest encounter ❤️
