We've heard from a number of gรฎte and chambre d'hรดtes owners over the past couple of weeks, several of them nowhere near the fires, watching bookings quietly disappear anyway. That's part of why we wanted to put something together.

If you've seen a map online showing France covered edge to edge in flame icons, take a breath. That's not an accurate picture of what's happening.

The wildfire that tore through Gironde and Landes was serious. Around 42,000 hectares burned, hundreds of homes were lost, and hundreds of thousands of people were evacuated at the peak. Our thoughts are with everyone affected. That fire has since been declared contained, though a blaze that size takes time to fully burn out. New fires have appeared elsewhere over the past few days too, including near Carcassonne and in the Var, which is a reminder this is a real risk this summer, not a reason to write off an entire region.

The rest of southwest France has continued largely as normal throughout. Markets are running, restaurants are open, and visitors are still arriving.

๐ˆ๐Ÿ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐ก๐š๐ฏ๐ž ๐š ๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐ฉ ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐š๐ง๐ง๐ž๐: check the specific commune your accommodation sits in, not just the department name. Regional tourism boards like Visit Nouvelle-Aquitaine are publishing regularly updated, location-specific advisories, and they're a better source than a shared map screenshot. If you're not sure whether your booking is anywhere near an affected area, drop us a message with the commune name and we'll help you find out.

๐ˆ๐Ÿ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ'๐ซ๐ž ๐š ๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ฅ ๐จ๐ฐ๐ง๐ž๐ซ: the last few weeks have likely meant cancellations for places that were never at risk, and that's a genuinely hard thing to absorb. Being specific and direct with worried guests about your exact location and current conditions tends to land better than a general "we're fine, come anyway." If you want a hand putting together clear, accurate information about your area to share with guests, message us. We're glad to help however we can.

Southwest France is still very much open. We hope you'll come see it.

Travelling to France in 2026? Here's What's Actually Changed at the Border

There's been a lot of confusion circulating about new EU travel rules, and we've seen some genuinely alarming misinformation shared online. So here's a clear, calm breakdown of what's in place, what's coming, and what you can stop worrying about. All links below go to official sources only.

What's Already in Place: The Entry/Exit System (EES)

The EES began a gradual rollout on 12 October 2025 and became fully operational on 10 April 2026. It applies to all non-EU and non-Schengen travellers visiting France for a short stay, which includes visitors from the UK, US, Canada and Australia.
EES replaces the old system of manually stamping passports, and instead electronically records every entry and exit across the 29-country Schengen Area. On your first visit after the system launches at your entry point, you may be asked to register your biometric details, such as fingerprints and a photo, at dedicated booths on arrival. There is no cost, and there is nothing you need to do before you travel.

What EES does not do:

It does not change the existing 90/180-day visa-free rule, and it is not a visa requirement. Your right to visit France for tourism is unchanged.
The practical reality is that checks may take slightly longer than previously, so allow a little extra time at the border, particularly during busy periods.

A Note for UK Travellers

If you are travelling via the Port of Dover, Eurotunnel Le Shuttle at Folkestone, or Eurostar at St Pancras International, any EES checks will be completed at the border before you leave the UK, rather than on arrival in France.
If you hold dual British-EU citizenship, you are exempt from EES only if you travel on your EU passport. Travelling on your British passport means you will be treated as a non-EU national.
If you are living in France under the post-Brexit Withdrawal Agreement, make sure you carry your residence card. Without it, you will be registered in the EES as a tourist.

What's Coming Later in 2026: ETIAS

ETIAS (the European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is not yet operational. It is currently expected to come online in the last quarter of 2026. It will work similarly to the US ESTA or the UK's own ETA scheme, and will be required for visa-exempt travellers, including those from the UK, before entering the Schengen Area.
ETIAS will cost 20 euros and is free for travellers under 18 and aged 70 or over. Once approved, it is valid for three years and covers multiple trips.

One important warning:

No websites currently issue ETIAS travel authorisations. Any website claiming to sell you one right now is fraudulent. The only official application portal is listed in the sources below, but as the system is not yet live, applications are not open.

The short version

EES is live: expect a slightly longer border process on your first crossing, with biometric registration at the port or airport. No action needed before you travel, and no cost involved.

ETIAS is not live yet: you cannot apply for it, and any site telling you otherwise is a scam. Watch for the official EU announcement later in 2026.
The 90/180-day visa-free rule is unchanged for everyone.

Have you ever felt like your France holiday was planned for someone else?

The same chรขteaux. The same restaurant recommendations. The same itinerary
everyone seems to follow.

Southwest France has something different โ€” sunflower fields at golden hour,
medieval squares that haven't changed in centuries, trails through the Pyrenees
where the only traffic is a few horses. And most visitors never make it here.

Wander in France builds personalised itineraries for the part of France worth
slowing down for. Tell us how you travel and we'll build a trip around you โ€”
local insights, hidden gems, and no two itineraries alike.
