The car I bought in France won't arrive for another month or two but another car related thing I did turn up at Retromobile and had shipped home arrived today! This is a 1950s era original porcelain enameled FIAT advertising sign. It's a bit over 3 feet tall and two feet wide and will be going up in my shop hopefully later this week.

Although I bought a classic Renault Alpine A110, if it were available in the US, I would have already bought the new interpretation that Renault came out with a few years ago. We stumbled across one in a parking lot and I figured it would be fun to post comparison pictures of the new vs the old. All the old car photos are of Alpines I have seen on this trip, including some of the one I bought. I did talk to an English owner of a modern A110 and he had praise for how the car drove but had nothing but problems with quality control. He was an early owner so it's possible that his experience isn't the norm now, but few cars today, outside of Lotus or cars like the discontinued Alfa Romeo 4C are built along these lines of truly light weight sports cars focused on the driving experience rather than just raw power.

The last museum we visited is the Musee national de l'automobile in Mulhouse, France. This is the museum that incorporates the Schlumpf collection. The Schlumpf brothers made their money in textiles and spent it all on acquiring cars, to the point where they were embezzling funds from their company and bankrupted it. The French government out out warrants for their arrest in the 1980s but they had fled to Switzerland. The government seized the car collection and it is now heralded as the largest car museum in the world, with over 100 Bugattis alone in the collection, not counting the huge number of early automobiles, historic race cars and other luxury cars in the collection. This museum takes quite a while to see and is simply overwhelming. It would definitely be worth a repeat visit as I'm sure I missed things and details that I would love to catch next time.

The next stop on our trip as we headed north and east from Bourgnone on our way towards Switzerland was L'Aventure Peugeot, the official Peugeot historic museum, not just covering the cars but all the Pigeon products inclusing pepper mills, farm utensils, tools, etc, along with a very good range of the cars made throughout their history. The building itself is packed with art deco design and it was a great museum to visit. We found out about it from the gentleman driving the MG we met at Chateau de Savigny and it was literally on the way to the next museum we were heading to.

I've been doing a terrible job of posting photos from this trip to France and Switzerland our first car-related stop was near Beaune. As an Abarth collector, this was a must visit museum. In a building of the chateau, there is one of, if not the largest collection of Abarth cars in the world. It certainly has my 11 cars beaten with several pure race cars that you won't generally see anywhere else. If Abarth s aren't your thing, there's an even larger collection of motorcycles, model airplanes, tractors, fire engines, and outside a collection of historic military jets from around the world. It's definitely worth a visit, in a beautiful part of the country, and the wine is quite nice too!

We're heading out of Paris today, going south with plans to visit other car collections as well as enjoy good food, wine, and scenery. We didn't make it back to Retromobile today but here are some additional photos from the show. There were far too many cars and things to look at and I didn't take photos of everything but here's another set to push the limit I'm allowed in a single post.

and I are in Paris right now, visiting France in order to attend Retromobile this week. We'll be in France until mid-February travelling and visiting other car museums, etc. as well as eating and drinking fantastic food and wine. As usual, I'm enjoying spotting cars on the streets, with the usual 2CVs a rogue Fiat 500 as well as this much more unusual Renault. I haven't been to France in probably about 30 years so everything is essentially a new experience again.

has finished painting my 1967 Mini Cooper S Mk1! This was a largely original car to start with and I've had this car largely disassembled for several years waiting to move forward and I'm finally getting around to getting it back together. The paint came out fantastically, in period correct Island Blue with an Old English White roof, Instead of the original Almond Green/OEW (my least favorite Mini colour). I have a large stockpile of new and original parts to get this reassembled, so hopefully will have a running hydrolastic suspension Mini on the road soon. has rebuilt the subframes and will be assembling the car. did the engine work, so this is definitely a multi-shop effort and I'm looking forward to being able to drive it again! #1275
