SPAIN 🇪🇸 THE REAL ALCÁZAR DE SEVILLA

A royal palace for more than a thousand years, and a royal residence still.

The Alcázar began as a fortress of Islamic Sevilla. In the 1360s, Pedro I of Castilla summoned master craftsmen from Granada and Toledo to build a palace in the Mudéjar style, a Christian king’s homage to the artistry of Islamic Spain. Carved plasterwork, ceramic tiles and gilded ceilings still glow as they did six centuries ago.

In 1503, the Casa de Contratación was founded within these walls to govern Spain’s trade with the Americas. Navigation for the New World was charted here, and Amerigo Vespucci served as its chief pilot. For a time, the routes of an age of discovery led back to this palace.

Carlos V married Isabel of Portugal here in 1526, and the gardens that unfold beyond the halls still reflect the Renaissance grandeur of his court, with fountains, pools and orange trees bringing shade and the sound of water to every corner.

Together with the Cathedral and the Archivo de Indias, the Alcázar has held UNESCO World Heritage status since 1987. It remains the oldest royal palace in Europe still in use, where the Spanish royal family resides whenever in Sevilla.

Seventy Years Restored

The Palacio de Liria has lived two lives.

The first began in 1767. Jacobo Fitz-James Stuart y Colón, great-grandson of King James II of England and a descendant of Christopher Columbus, raised a French-style palace worthy to stand beside the Royal Palace of Madrid.

Its salons gathered the great names of Europe. The young Eugénie de Montijo once stepped aside so her beloved sister Paca could marry the Duke of Alba. Eugénie went on to become Empress of the French. In 1920 she came to Liria for her final days and passed away, as the family tells it, in the very bed where Paca had died sixty years before.

The second life rose from ruin. In November 1936 the palace was bombed and looted, leaving its four façades standing around a hollow shell. The masterpieces had already been carried to safety in the vaults of the Prado and the Bank of Spain.

In 1942 the 17th Duke of Alba entrusted its rebirth to his friend Sir Edwin Lutyens, the architect of New Delhi. His daughter Cayetana completed the work in 1956. She travelled across Europe for the chandeliers, tapestries and gilded furniture that dress these rooms today.

Seventy years on, Liria glows once more: crystal and silk, candlelight on Goya and Titian, and a family still at home among them.

There is a particular kind of silence in the Dolomites in winter.

From December through February, snow transforms the mountains of northern Italy. The great limestone peaks rise above white valleys, morning light moves across the ridgelines, and days begin beneath some of the most extraordinary winter landscapes in Europe.
