Most people picture embroidery as flat: thread on cloth, decoration on a surface. Lesage breaks that assumption in the first ten minutes.

Our team took a hands-on workshop at École Lesage, beginning with their historical archives. Seeing couture samples executed for legendary fashion houses since the 19th century makes one thing immediately clear: this is closer to sculpture than stitching. It is dimensional, textural, built in relief with sequins, pearls, and cut ribbons.

Then came the workshop table. Spools of thread, trays of graded beads, and the patient realisation that turning a flat print into something tactile means building layer by layer, stitch by stitch.

We test these experiences ourselves before they ever make it onto an itinerary. This one, we would send any client who appreciates craft at its highest level, and wants to understand how true couture is made.

Designing France trips is easier when the brief is clear from the start.

When you reach out, it helps to share: party composition, ages, dates, rough budget, pace preference, any relevant medical or mobility considerations, and the "must-include" passions - art, food, w**e, fashion, history, whatever it is that makes THIS particular trip matter to THIS particular client.

With that, we can propose options that feel genuinely tailored, not generic.

A client once mentioned, almost in passing, which French mathematicians he'd admired his whole career. We filed it away.

Months later, the library holding their original manuscripts was mid-renovation, closed to the public, scaffolding and all. One call to the people who still hold the keys, and we had a morning: just him, the manuscripts, and the kind of quiet a renovation site doesn't usually allow.

He didn't say much. Some reactions don't need commentary.

We're not in the business of grand gestures. We're in the business of remembering what you said six months ago, and knowing exactly who to call when it matters.

Two years ago, a client, a photographer, asked us about a château that's closed to the public. Château de Bagatelle, the "folie" built on a bet between Marie-Antoinette and the Comte d'Artois, saved from demolition by a public petition.

Most people assume that's the end of the story. It isn't, if you know who to ask.

We did. He got in.

That's the part of this job a search engine will never do for you.

The sky did most of the work that evening. We just made sure our clients were on the water for it.

We'd planned the timing on purpose, eight thirty, half an hour past sunset, so they'd catch exactly this and the Eiffel Tower's sparkle right on cue at nine. Then, on the day, they asked to move dinner earlier.

One phone call to the people we trust, and the boat moved with them. They still caught the sparkle, right where we'd planned it. Just with dinner exactly when they wanted it, too.

That's not luck. That's knowing which detail actually mattered, and never letting it slip.

We tested two restaurants this week. We're recommending one.

Apicius was the one. The garden is the kind of secluded, balmy space where people actually come to enjoy dinner, not to be seen doing it, which is rarer in Paris than it should be. Service struck the balance we're always looking for: attentive without ever hovering, the sort of charm that makes you forget anyone's working. The food is classic, done properly, the fish in particular was worth the trip on its own.

We'd send clients here for a splurge without hesitation.

The other place, less so. Not every test makes the list, and that's rather the point of testing.

A car broke down on the way to pick up a client for their airport transfer. Nothing dramatic, just bad luck at the worst possible moment.

The driver called the hotel. The hotel sent their own driver instead. Nobody argued about who'd pay for what, that got sorted quietly, afterwards, between the people whose job it is to sort it. The client walked out, got in a car, went to the airport. That's the whole story, as far as they were concerned.

This is mostly what the job actually is: not preventing every single thing that can go wrong (nobody can promise that), but making sure it never becomes your client's problem, or yours, at 3am from a different time zone.

Three things we're looking forward to this autumn.

First, the vines turning gold. We'd booked rooms at Château de Béru in 2022 when the stately ones were suddenly requisitioned, a ch*****ne biopic had taken over the best rooms in the house, and we found ourselves elsewhere while a crew turned a Burgundy estate into a stand-in for Ch*****ne. Good story now, less good at check-in.

Second, market stalls doing what they do best this time of year, cèpes, girolles, the whole forest laid out in wicker baskets, usually with someone's grandmother elbowing past you for the good mushrooms.

And third, just the light. That particular gold that autumn does in France, on water, on trees, on everything, for about three weeks before it all turns to rain.

We'll take all three, in whichever order the weather gives them to us.

Some restaurants we're genuinely excited to go back to, or send clients to.

In Paris, Argile, tucked into the 9th near Gare Saint-Lazare, where chef Romain Lamon's cooking is generous rather than clever, a mushroom bathed in a deep, savoury sauce with pearl onions and croutons, the kind of dish that rewards a second glass of something pink just to keep pace with it.

In Reims, Brasserie Le Jardin, the more relaxed sibling of Domaine Les Crayères, set in an outbuilding within the park with its own veranda facing the herb garden. This is where you send a client who wants the Crayères experience at lunch pace: a whole roast carved tableside, no rush, no fuss.

And in Beaune, La Table du Square, a bistro on the ring road with black-and-white stripes on the walls, portraits of Gabin and de Funès looking on, and a w**e list running past a thousand references, which, this being Beaune, is exactly as it should be. Even the fish comes with real technique, a char-grilled lettuce heart and a butter sauce doing far more work than a side dish usually gets to.

Three different registers, three reasons to keep going back.
