Some fantastic work from the Bikery team, a project Nestrans are very pleased to support through funding.

Over the last year we have been super busy helping you to start or keep cycling, have a look at what we've achieved. Having your continued support is vital to the project so get involved if you can; buy a bike, donate a bike, donate your time, service your bike through us or join one of our many bike maintenance courses. A new artwork trail has been installed along the popular Formartine and Buchan Way funded by Nestrans.

Each of the 11 corten steel signs feature a single line from 'Fit Wye' - a specially commissioned Doric poem by award-winning local writer Shane Strachan.

The poem can be read in any direction encouraging exploration along the route. The trail encourages people to explore the Formartine and Buchan Way through active travel by walking, cycling or wheeling while connecting with the region's artistic and cultural heritage.

Today, Nestrans is setting out what strategic transport in the North East needs from the next Scottish Government parliamentary term to 2031.

As the Regional Transport Partnership for the North East of Scotland, we’re calling for practical support that will help improve the journeys that underpin our economy and wellbeing.

Whether that’s commuting to work or education, accessing healthcare or helping rural communities and businesses stay connected.

Investing in our paths means that more people can choose these spaces to enjoy walking, wheeling or cycling. We're so pleased to work with partners to support these improvements to the Formartine & Buchan Way.

Ongoing improvements to the Formartine and Buchan Way have made the route an even better space for users to enjoy.

During the past year, those walking, wheeling, cycling and horse riding have really started to enjoy the benefits of the upgrades which began in 2023, which make the route safer, more welcoming and easier to access.

Across three phases between Newmachar and Ellon, more than 3.2km of path surface has been replaced, in excess of 3km of replacement drainage has been installed and 215m of the existing unbound path has been improved.

Five access control points onto the route have also been upgraded, making the Formartine and Buchan Way more accessible and safer for a wider range of users. In addition to these access control point improvements, a further three have been upgraded south of Newmachar and 19 between Fraserburgh and Maud.

The latest improvements to the route were made possible by funding from Walk Wheel Cycle Trust Scotland and Nestrans
