We've been treated to some amazing Northern Lights displays in recent times in the UK and Ireland, and this looks set to continue in 2026 due the current cycle of solar activity. Want to enjoy them on a visit here? Here are some tips:
1️⃣ Season - typically between September and April are the best chances of seeing them, and of course the further north the better!
2️⃣ Download the Aurora app - this gives forecasts and sends notifications when sightings are likely or have been reported in your area
3️⃣ If activity is high, find a dark, northerly facing view ideally with good elevation, or where weather apps show clearer skies to maximize your chances with lower cloud cover
4️⃣Camera settings - setting your camera to night mode with a long exposure (at least 6 seconds ideally) and holding still produces great imagery
5️⃣Patience - they don't always appear when you expect them, but if activity is high and you don't see them then patience really pays off!
So keep a look out next time you travel here, you might just be in for a big surprise...
