At this time of year we're looking at tasks to finish before winter and also tasks for the spring.

For 144016 some rough surface on the bodysides of 55816 and 55852 will be rubbed down and repainted in the next few weeks. We might even get the final doorway floor replaced before winter. Fortunately the roof repaint has been completed. Some paintwork detailing on the car ends of all three cars needs attention. A handful of mechanical tasks will be addressed too, though the unit is essentially available for service. Although the internal paintwork is reasonably good, this is slowly being refreshed in the correct Northern colours

144004 has been used for most of the Pacer services this year, while 144016 has been receiving attention. In 2027, we aim to replace the distorted doorway floors of 144004, repaint the bodysides in an accurate Regional Railways livery and also start sprucing up the underframe paintwork and lettering. 144016 will likely operate more regularly than in 2026.

On top of this planned restoration work, routine servicing is to be done and we also need to keep on top of any faults as they arise, which together take up a lot of time!

In the meantime, here's a shot 144004 in use last week.

144004 climbs the 1 in 47 gradient up to Lionheart station with a passenger service, whilst 55852 receives some attention - Wed 12th August 2026. The sidings on the right are on the level. The gradient is on the curved section of line between Lionheart station and the trackbed of the original Alnwick to Alnmouth branch line. Interestingly, it was necessary to use the sanders today to prevent wheelslip on the gradient. Perhaps there was a greasy railhead. The weather was warm (25 deg C) and dry.

Steve and Adam masking off the rubber window surrounds on a door of 55852, before application of black rubber paint.

In the next couple of weeks we'll freshen up the light grey paint on these doors. It's quite a lengthy task to paint the doors neatly, which is why the job has been left until now!

Roof painting of 144004 has now been completed, with the exception of the cab areas. Studying photos of the original Regional Railways paint scheme showed that the yellow band extended over the roof, so this has been replicated on 55804, with 55827 to be addressed soon. There's much to do on 144004 in order to correct its RR paint scheme and this will be done over the next 9 months. Once the roofs have been completed, the cab ends will be repainted, with the headlamp recesses also to be painted yellow.

With the recent good weather, we've been pushing on with the painting of 144016 and 144004. The roofs of all three cars in 144016 have been painted, with just the areas over the cab ends to finish.

The undercoated cab at the far end is just discernible in this view from this morning (08/07/2026). It had received two coats of yellow by teatime. The near cab received its second coat of yellow too, so both are now ready for the unit numbers to be applied. The black areas around the headlamps and windows still need to be refreshed, as do the roof areas over both cabs. 16 of the 20 doors and also areas on the underframes need new paint so there's plenty to do yet!

55816’s cab front was painted with HMG KX white undercoat today. This is used to block out any discoloured areas as well as forming a good base for the topcoats. Next week it will receive the first coat of yellow. A start was also made on undercoating the cab end of 55839.

144004 was used today for driver and guard training. Similar sessions will take place throughout the summer as we have a good number of volunteers keen to learn these roles.
The unit has had a busy week, being used for the All Things Diesel event last weekend and for a private hire by Northumberland Vintage Tractor Club on Thursday evening.
