The Lake District, Cumbria have produced this new video about Westmorland and the Cumbrian Dales - see if you can spot our fleeting appearance!!

We may be biased (it’s where we live!) but it’s a fantastic place to visit and often a lot quieter than the more well-known parts of the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales.

The fairly little known ‘Cautley Spout’ in the Howgill Fells is England’s highest waterfall!

It is in the Cumbrian part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and tumbles nearly 200m down a series of cascades, starting near the plateau of ‘the Calf’, the highest hill in the Howgills. Below the falls it meanders across the valley floor as Cautley Holme Beck to join the River Rawthey and flow into Sedbergh, which in turn joins the River Lune (which eventually empties into the Irish Sea just south of Lancaster!).

It is a flat and easy walk from the parking near the Cross Keys Temperance Inn to the base of the falls, and the first just over 1km, as far as the info board about the area, is now accessible to wheelchairs and buggies thanks to a new bridge installed by the National Park.

If you want a more challenging walk, there is a great (but steep and rocky!) path up the right hand side of the falls, which you can follow all the way to the summit of the Calf. You can then drop down via the summit of Calders and Settlebeck Gill into the charming town of Sedbergh, before returning along the valley.

Matt guided a beautiful walk from Grasmere in the heat this week, up Sour Milk Gill to Easedale Tarn then onto the ridge for fantastic views of the surrounding hills.

The person who booked this walk was getting back into longer, more challenging hikes and wanted the support of a guide to feel confident in pushing herself a bit more in the hills - a great reason to do a guided walk and really nice for Matt to be able to support her and help her find her feet and her confidence.

These balmy summer days are the perfect time for a gentle stroll around the stunning hay meadows in the Yorkshire Dales, before they’re cut and gone for another year!

These ones in Dentdale are absolutely beautiful and see far fewer visitors than the well known (but also extremely beautiful!) meadows around Muker.

The website has suggested walking routes around these and several other fantastic areas of meadows if you’d like some inspiration, or have a look at the Muddy Boots blog (link in bio) for some more information about hay meadows and how to visit them.

Is this the best linear walk in the Lake District?! We definitely think it’s up there!

Linear walks give you a real sense of travelling as you feel the landscape change around you, although the logistics of getting to and from the start and end can be a bit tricky… unless you’re on a walking holiday, of course! 😁

This one starts near the top of the Great Langdale valley and climbs over Stake Pass to drop into Borrowdale. It’s an absolutely stunning walk, with huge views, a myriad of waterfalls, crystal clear water, swimming spots, mountain tarns and more!

It’s difficult to do as a day walk without some complex public transport manoeuvres (which is what I did on this day, so definitely doable!) but is one of the walk on our new Journey Through the Lakes walking holiday, which is a much more relaxing way to do it!!

Our popular ‘Film Sets and Flapjacks’ social walk is this coming Sunday from Buckden!

We stop in at Yockenthwaite Farm to chat to Liz, the owner, about life in the Dales, what it’s been like to have their home used as a film set in All Creatures Great and Small, and their farm diversification into delicious granola! Plus we get to try one of her fantastic flapjacks! 😋
