Week 16 of our 25th anniversary series - HMS Challenger: The Voyage That Created Modern Oceanography
In the spring of 1872, HMSChallengerdeparted Portsmouth on what would become one of the most important scientific voyages in maritime history. Originally built as a Royal Navy corvette, the vessel was transformed into a floating laboratory for a four year expedition that would fundamentally change humanity’s understanding of the oceans.
At a time when much of the deep sea remained unexplored and mysterious, the British Government and the Royal Society commissioned the expedition to investigate the physical and biological nature of the world’s oceans.
