“A fulmar is NOT just a seagull!”

We are very passionate about our birds here at Seacoast and fulmars are one our favourites!!

Fulmar are related to albatross which we think is AMAZING and can soar for hours on the wind barely flapping their wings.

They come from a family of birds called ‘tube noses’ due to the tube-like external nostrils on the top of their bills, giving them an excellent sense of smell and the ability to drink sea water and secrete salt out of the tubes!

❤️ Watching them in flight is such a treat and listening to them cackle with their partner on the nest is really something special!

Like we said, a fulmar is not just a seagull! 😉 😉😉

Now you see them, now you don’t!

Auks are fantastic divers, they’re pursuit predators meaning they chase their fish through the water column. They have very dense, heavy bones and they “fly” through the water using their wings!

An average dive is around 30 seconds but they can stay under for up to 2 minutes and guillemots have been known to dive as deep as 200 metres!

BREAKING NEWS!

We've started to see the auks flying back to the island with fish in their beaks which can mean only one thing.....the chicks are hatching!
🐟🐠🐡🍤

We never see the chicks as they stay tucked away in the burrows or safely hidden on the ledges until they're ready to fledge, but it's super exciting to know that we have little pufflings up there!

As well as being monogamous, seabirds practice 'site fidelity' meaning that in around 4 years time the chicks will return to the island to start their own family ❤️ There is so much to love about these awesome animals!
