NOTICE TO MARINERS No. 6 of 2026

Notice is hereby given that the following instructions are issued in the interests of Safety of navigation

UNION BRIDGE TO BERWICK 9.5 KM TWEED SWIM

Date: Sunday 6 September 2026
Time: 1030 hrs – approximately 1600 hrs
Location: River Tweed – Union Bridge to Berwick RNLI Station, Carrs Rock

Mariners are advised that an organised 9.5 km swimming event will take place on the River Tweed on Sunday 6 September 2026.

Approximately 70 swimmers will participate, commencing from Union Bridge in waves from 1030 hrs, with the event expected to conclude at approximately 1600 hrs at Berwick RNLI Station, Carrs Rock.

The swimmers will be escorted and monitored by approximately 16 personnel from Borders Water Rescue Team. All swimmers will be equipped with mandatory tow floats and shoes.

Navigation Warning

All vessels navigating the River Tweed during the event are requested to:

Navigate with extreme caution and maintain a safe speed and distance from swimmers and support personnel.
Contact Borders Water Rescue Team before transiting the river to or from Tweed Dock.
Monitor VHF Channels 16 and 12 throughout the event.
Follow any instructions issued by the event safety team.

A massive thank you to Iain A. Grieve and his team for helping us with painting the red section at the bottom of the lighthouse.

Iain generously gave up some of his time for free last week, and I have to say, it looks fantastic! 👏

Iain has painted the lighthouse in full on several occasions, dating all the way back to 1989, so he was really keen to help get it looking great again.

Notice is hereby given that the following instructions are issued in light of Safety of navigation.

Trade 4 Event – Saturday 15 August 2026

Please be advised that the Trade 4 event will take place on Saturday 15 August 2026.

The event is scheduled to commence at 12:30 hours and is expected to conclude by approximately 16:30 hours, subject to prevailing conditions.

The area of operation will be confined to the section of the river between the Old Bridge and the Railway Bridge. No participating craft will operate downstream of the Old Bridge or upstream of the Railway Bridge for the duration of the event.

A maximum of two boats will be on the water at any one time. A dedicated safety launch will be in attendance throughout the event to provide safety cover and support as required.

All participants will be briefed on the event procedures and safety arrangements prior to commencement. Every effort will be made to ensure the event is conducted safely and with minimal disruption to other river users.

Notice is hereby given that the following instructions are issued in light of Safety of navigation.

ABPmer current monitoring – River Tweed
As part of their ongoing work, they have deployed a small seabed frame with a current meter in the river just upstream of the rail bridge and is marked by a orange surface marker, see chartlet below.

All river users are required to give this a wide berth of at least 20 meters.

Notice is hereby given that the following instructions are issued in light of Safety of navigation.
"TWEED HALF SWIM EVENT" are holding their annual swim event on Sun 19th July from the A1 bridge to the Lifeboat station at Spittal. The event will start at 0830, around 50 Swimmers will take part and be monitored by the Borders Water Rescue Team for the full duration until arrival at the RNLI station Spittal at 1100hrs. During this time all vessels are advised to contact (BWRT) on VHF Ch 12 & 16 before transiting the river to and from Tweed Dock.
All enquiries regarding this notice should be directed to the BWRT before any movement during the event.

Notice is hereby given that the following instructions are issued in light of Safety of navigation.

All vessels please be advised!

Berwick Amateur Rowing Club
are hosting crews from the region for "Sunday League" racing on Sunday 3rd May 2026
Possibly 12 crews to participate in the event.
The racing will take place between the Royal Border Bridge and The Royal Tweed Bridge, starting 12 and finishing approx 4pm.
A Safety launch will be in attendance on the river and there will only be 2crews racing at any one time.

All vessels are required to contact the safety launch on VHF ch12 before passing.
