We always prefer to carry out inspections in our workshop where we have the benefit of column lifts, brake rollers and all of our equipment on hand.

But when an on-site inspection is required, we use our Hope Scrutineer Trailer Diagnostic System to help us properly test the trailer’s braking, air and electrical systems on site.

It allows us to check for issues including air leaks, poor brake adjustment, lighting faults and ABS/EBS problems without needing to bring the trailer back to the workshop.

Workshop or on-site, the aim is the same: a thorough inspection and defects picked up before they become downtime.

Horsebox in with us this week for a set of tyres.

All of the existing tyres still had over 10mm of tread, so on the face of it they looked like they had plenty of life left. The problem was they were all over 10 years old, and once we inspected them properly the age related cracking was clear to see.

Not only is tyre age a concern at MOT, tyres in this condition can become a real safety risk regardless of how much tread is left.

Our customer was happy for us to replace the full set, so we supplied and fitted Kumho tyres. We’ve had really good feedback from customers using Kumho, particularly for the price, longevity and grip.

We supply and fit tyres in house, and also offer:

• Free wheel retorque after you’ve covered some mileage
• Free vehicle health check while the tyres are being changed
• Free courtesy vehicle, so you can head off for some lunch or even pop into Bicester Village while we get the work done (no free spending money though sorry)

If your horsebox, truck or van tyres are getting older, it’s worth having them checked properly even if the tread still looks good.

Transport Manager Refresher Course – Day 1

Plenty of useful discussions today, particularly around brake testing and the continued emphasis on carrying out a brake performance assessment at every safety inspection, with laden roller brake testing wherever practicable.

As well as maintaining fleets, we also operate our own vehicles, so we understand compliance from both sides. It’s important that we keep up to date with the latest guidance, not just for our own operation, but so we can continue to support our customers.

This one came in with no brakes. The cause? The wet timing belt had broken up and sent debris straight into the vacuum pump, destroying it completely. No vacuum pump means no brake servo assistance.

The Ford EcoBlue 2.0 wet belt is a known issue on 2017 onwards Transits. When the belt deteriorates, debris circulates through the engine oil and can take out other components — in this case, the brakes.
Full wet belt service carried out including new belt, tensioners, and vacuum pump replacement.

⚠️ If your Transit Custom has covered 60,000 miles or is 5 years old, don’t wait for a warning light. By then it can already be too late.
